its mainly environmentalist ...a lot of countryside is destroyed ...but if you have been on a high speed train ..like london to paris on eurostar then the benefits are clear

A lot of it is to do with the fact that folk think that spending £100billion and destroying large swathes of countryside just to enable people to get from London to Birmingham 20 minutes quicker, is a poor idea. Even more so, when one considers that after lockdown, many folk will continue to work from home on a permanent basis, so there will be less demand for such journeys.

I believe it's because the line goes through some of the landed gentry's estates. They don't like it up 'em.
