Using "abruptly" in a sentence?
The word placement "abruptly" has me confused.
I expressed the word in a sentence (two variations) that both appear to sound correct.
However, I imagine only one is written in proper English.
Officer William and the battalion abruptly turn to look at a far distant white light that flickers.
or
Officer William and the battalion turn abruptly to look at a far distant white light that flickers.
What is the proper way to write the above?
Thank you in advance.

Adverbs that are applied to the main verb of a sentence are placed before the verb but after auxiliary verbs.
The first example is correct. Here is a link that will help you.

Either way is correct. By the way there are no auxiliary verbs in the sentence.

I would say that both are correct. I would probably say 'abruptly turn', but that may be just my speech pattern.
