What is the difference between storytelling and read aloud?

Storytelling

is reciting a story from memory

and can also include making up a story on the spot.

Reading aloud

is obviously easier

because the words of the story are there in front of you.

Reading aloud involves spoken language, but at the same time a printed text is present. This means that during story reading both oral and written language are modeled at once. On the other hand, storytelling does not require the presence of a printed text.

Many sensible answers already, and I'll just add that while lots of people read aloud to themselves, I don't think many people do "story telling" without an audience.

Storytelling requires memory or thinking about what you're saying.

One is telling (not reading) a story, the other is reading (anything) aloud.

Story telling is to dramatize the story. Give it life, act the parts.

Reading aloud has none of that art.
