Why did people mock Sarah Palin who could see Russia from Alaska when Alaska is Russian to begin with?

You can't see Russia from Alaska, that is why she was mocked.  Even at the narrowest gap in the Baring sea, the distance is over 50 miles.  The furthest you can see from ground level is about 12 miles.

Alaskan hasn't been Russian in over 150 years.  Russia sold it to the U.S. in 1867 and it has been American ever since.

Seward's Folly messed up Palin's Russia.

This was an attempt at sarcasm. Since 1867, Alaska was no longer Russian territory. The purchase was referred to Seward's Folly.
