Does the quarter mile matter?

Why does every car guy always ask about how fast can your car run the quarter mile. Does the quarter mile matter that much in racing? Why is the quarter mile so popular and so used in racing?

Drag racing is probably the most accessible form of motor racing; you don't need specialist equipment or even a race track, any straight stretch of road with easily defined start and end points will do.

I would guess that a distance of 1/4 mile was fairly standard between traffic lights / junctions in the US, so that became the benchmark for street racing.

The most popular drag strips in the United Sates are a quarter mile long.
