Why do people just stop responding?

Ok I've noticed a trend with sellers on Facebook when I state I'm interested in the item and where it is located they will respond quickly but if I ask them if they can hold the item for a day or 2 for me to collect it, they immediately ignore and don't reply.

I know people want to quickly sell the item. I even told this person I'd like to buy it in 3 days time if they still had it. They were happy with that. But as soon as I asked if they could hold it for me because I want to come and collect it on Thursday, they just stopped responding.

Later they end up selling the item. Im wondering why they all can't be polite enough to decline or answer that if it's available by Thursday I can get it.

What am I missing with online communication these days?? Is this the new trend to ghost someone mid conversation if you don't like what they are saying??

Update:

If I was selling something, I would be upfront about it and either hold the item or tell the interested buyers they need to come asap to collect it or someone else will. Not leave people hanging. I know not everyone thinks like I do.

I actually want to pass up their items when they start behaving that way.

Because everyone who's sold enough online has dealt with people who reschedule things 3 times over a week and don't show up and are sick of it.  Other items I price to sell and I might get 30 offers to come get it.  If you tell someone you can't hold it for them they usually want to give you some story to try to convince you to hold it for them or get upset with you.  Frankly it's just easier to not respond.  If that person never wants to buy from me because of that, I'm perfectly happy with that.

everyone have own lifes and jobs and have to take care of their families and pay bills and ect they cant always on the computers 24  /7  everyday . everyone has other things to do . so not big deal not everyone selling items  because maybe they dont have no time to or they just already found someone else to sell it or just saving up money to buy some thing else is useful. you shouldnt worried too much .

Some people dont want to Hold the Item and there Afraid of losing the Sale if they say No and they dont want to tell the Person so some people just dont Answer and wait for someone else to Buy it that wants to take it right away

It's always first come, first serve. It's not just because you saw it first, you already have it. The first to send payment or first to arrive to pick it up, gets to have it. Rather than point it out to you  they just stop talking. You're not to blame though. If that's the way you want to deal then so be it. Just keep asking. Who knows? Maybe some seller out there will still agree with you.

I keep having the same problem since I'm a good 2-3 hours away from the city so I have to schedule my trips way beforehand preventing me from jumping out for a meetup right there and then which is what most sellers around me demand. It's not like we don't have work but if they expect to meet right that day after office hours which is just not possible for me, I have to ask to meet up on the weekend. Some agree but some of those who do don't show up and don't message at all about the cancellation so I end up wasting gas money and time.

Alphonse thankyou. I'll just leave it be and check back later to see if they have sold it or not.

It's because a lot of people say they are coming and don't so it's generally first to see will buy. Unless you try offering them a non refundable holding deposit by PayPal or something, then they might consider it.
