Can someone please explain why Britney is under a conservatorship, and what a conservatorship is? I find it really confusing

She is not mentally competent to manage her own finances so her father was appointed by the court to look after her affairs.

A conservator is someone a court appoints to take care of your finances if you're judged unable to do so by yourself. Britney was judged to be not able to take care of her own money. to make her own decisions. So a court appointed Britney's dad Jamie to take care of her finances, and she's been trying to get control for herself.
In November a court allowed Britney to choose an outside financial group to take over her conservatorship, but apparently it didn't release her dad, and they have to do that.
I haven't been following the case, but apparently Britney's been unable to convince a court that she's sane enough, 'normal' enough to take care of her own finances.
