Birds on Power lines!?

Birds resting on high-voltage power lines are a common sight. A certain copper power line carries a current of 143 A, and its resistance per unit length is 4.65 × 10−5 Ω/m.

If a bird is standing on this line with its feet 11 cm apart, what is the potential difference across the bird’s feet?

Answer in units of V.

    resistance R = 4.65e-5Ω/m * 0.11m = 5.115e-6 Ω

    p.d. = I*R = 143A * 5.115e-6Ω = 7.3e-4 V

    or 0.73 mV
