What is the relationship of time to energy expended?

Let's say a 150 lb. man carries a 90 lb. teen a distance of 100 feet in 1 minute over a flat path. Next he carries the same teen the same distance in half the time. Does he expend more energy in the shorter period of time?

He probably does expend more energy, because his kinetic energy at the end of the 100 feet is probably greater in the first scenario.

However, if he manages to end both trips at a speed of nearly zero, then there is no official difference in the energy expended.
