Chlorine is produced by the following reaction: MnO₂ + 4HCl → MnCl₂ + Cl₂ + 2H₂O ?

Determine the theoretical yield of chlorine if 86.0g of MnO₂ and 50.0g HCl react.

23.4 g Cl₂

24.3 g Cl₂

70.2 g Cl₂

50.0 g Cl₂

    MnO₂ + 4HCl → MnCl₂ + Cl₂ + 2H₂O

    moles of MnO2 = 0.9892 moles

moles of HCl needed for a complete reaction = 0.9892*4 = 3.957 moles

but we have 50.0g / 36.5 moles of HCl =1.37 moles

so HCl is the limiting reactant and forms 1.37/ 4 moles of Cl2

    = 0.342 moles of Cl2 or 24.3 g of Cl2
