Why is Jesus just a fictional character in a book?

If you don't believe that Jesus was the son of God, that's fine by me. I couldn't care less. But there's plenty of historical evidence to suggest that he lived, so even if you are not a Christian or happen to be a person who doesn't put any stock in Christianity, that shouldn't matter. Asking "Why is (insert the name of the historical figure of your choosing here) fictional?" is completely imbecilic. Then again, asking why a person you believe to be fictional is fictional is even more absurd. You're not exactly batting a thousand in life, are you?
