It’s called Medicare, and is funded by levy on our personal incomes. Last time I checked it was 1.5%, but it could have gone up.

Australia's health care system is primarily funded by Medicare, the national health insurance scheme. A combination of a Government and a Private health care system.
All Australians are covered Federal Government system "medicare" The cost varies slightly to reflect the persons income level. For day to day GP visits you may chose your own doctor who receives a payment from the Government for the visit. Some doctors also require a co-payment from the Patient.
Although the wait for non urgent can drag on If it is urgent and a serious risk to your life ie: Heart attack you will be treated quickly and with a relevant specialist for your condition.
The Private System has declined considerably in recent times as increasing payments has seen people leave as it is not seen as value for money.
