How to calculate total tax on 1040 from W-2 form?

When I calculate my total tax, do I only include federal income tax withheld from my W-2, or do I also add in social security tax and medicare tax withheld? Can't find any explanation of this online :(

    None of the above.

Federal income tax withheld goes on the 1040, but only on the line for tax withheld, NOT on the line for total tax.

The total tax cannot be calculated simply by looking at the W-2 and cannot be calculated from the tax shown on the W-2.  You calculate total tax by starting with the amount of income, subtracting some things, and then looking up the remaining number in the tax table.

Social security tax and medicare tax do not go on the W-2 but may go on one of the schedules in some special situations, but usually not.

Your total tax is the total of FEDERAL TAX WITHHELD from your pay. You don't include state, local or Medicare taxes. That's VERY clear on the 1040 form.

Federal income tax withheld goes on line 25a like it says. Do not include social security or medicare. "Total tax" on line 24 is how much you owed.

Use an online program, like Turbo Tax or TaxSlayer to do your taxes.

You just answer some questions and copy the numbers from your W-2 form right into an online form that looks exactly like the W-2.

Then the program does all the work of calculating your total income and total taxes.

BTW - social security tax and medicare tax do not count towards total taxes.

If manually filling in a paper 1040, the amount of tax is the amount in box 2 of the W-2.  The SS/MC taxes are NOT refundable and do not count.

Federal only, that is the income tax.
