How do I overcome fear of driving on main roads?

I just got my drivers license a few weeks ago but I never really drove on the main roads like highways and just any road with a lot of cars on it mainly cause my parents were to scared to take me on those roads. I will be taking 3 class course with an instructor that will take me on the main roads soon but any advice right now would greatly help.

OK, apparently you didn't get very good driving instruction.  Here are two basic facts that you are not aware of, because ummmmm...nobody bothered to clue you in.   QUIZ TIME:

    1)  What is the most dangerous place to drive any vehicle?

    2)  What is the SAFEST place to drive any vehicle

A1)  The most dangerous place to drive is the PARKING LOT.  This is due to obstructed vision, random traffic and random pedestrian traffic.

A2)  The safest place to drive is main roads like HIGHWAYS or EXPRESSWAYS in particular.  Yeah, the speeds can be higher.  But there's less random traffic, BY DESIGN.  There's also no pedestrian traffic.   (in theory, at least)

In other words, it is more dangerous to drive 5MPH through the wally world parking lot than it is to drive 65MPH on the highway.  Once you start driving on the highway, you will understand that.  Highway driving is rather uneventful, usually.  And uneventful means no surprises, which means relatively safe (from the point of view of the driver).

Drive as if you have been driving for decades and the fear will go away in due time.

Take the car out for a spin on Sunday when the roads are less full.

The only way to overcome your fear is to face it head on. That means, taking the opportunity to drive on main roads until you feel comfortable. Think of it like exercising a specific muscle. The more you do it, the stronger said muscle becomes. If you don't exercise the muscle you want to grow, then it leads to a deficiency and a lack of growth. The same when it comes to driving and learning to build your skills.

You could express your willingness to drive on main roads with your parents, and tell them why you need to get comfortable with it. The only way you will improve your driving skills is to introduce yourself to those situations that you don't know. Of course, the goal is to pass the driving course, but more than that, it should be to become a safe and skilled driver. There are a variety of situations that you will face, and the only way to improve is to encounter them.

Practice on highways that are not too busy first.  You will soon get the hang of it.
