According to online: though our veins are blue in color, human blood is never blue, supposedly the bluish color of our veins is only an optical illusion. Another answer from a medical source says: the reason why veins might seem blue may have to do with the level of oxygen in the blood. Arteries transport blood that is rich in oxygen away from the heart to be used by organs and tissues in the body. The veins return deoxygenated blood to the heart.
A science website says veins look blue because light has to penetrate the skin to illuminate them, blue and red light (being of different wavelengths) penetrate with different degrees of success. What makes it back to your eye is the blue light. <--- however, the same article then goes on to give validity to the oxygen-theory, stating that: The heart pumps blood to your lungs to pick up oxygen. The oxygen-rich blood is then pumped out to your body from your arteries. It's bright red at this point. From your arteries, the blood flows through tiny blood vessels called capillaries, where it gives up oxygen to the body's tissues. Your lips have a lot of these capillaries, which is why they're red.
^ If color change has nothing to do with oxygen, then why bring up the fact, that it does? If you get a bruise, due to bleeding on the inside, does red and blue, not make purple? If purple is present, then shouldn't both blue and red be present to create purple?
