Since the US economy is 73% consumer spending and a lot of us seniors spend more money now then we did while working it wouldn't  make sense.

Back when I was working I knew I wanted to enjoy retirement  so bought only necessitates and saved all I could. Now, at least before Covid, I spend.  There are more dining out, more trips, more spoiling the grandkids.  So we might no longer have jobs or pay into SS but we do pay income tax and our spending creates many jobs for others
