A layer of oil (n = 1.45) floats on an unknown liquid. A ray of light originates in the oil and passes into the unknown liquid. The angle of incidence is 63.2 degrees, and the angle of refraction is 60.8 degrees. What is the index of refraction of the unknown liquid?

    If you can't recall the order of the indexes in Snell's Law, hopefully you can remember that if the light ray is bent TOWARD the normal, then the second medium is more optically dense. Then you might reason that

    n = 1.45 * sin63.2º / sin60.8º = 1.48
