Please help ... What is meant by 'providing' here in this context?

Context:

To determine the state of flow, the Reynolds number (Re) should be calculated providing an indication of the degree of turbulence.

    This means giving or disclosing.

    I think they missed a necessary comma before "providing", myself.  Or, they could have said "In order to provide" instead.
