Room spinning due to laying down?

I'm trying to figure ot whats causing my girlfriends medical issue and how to deal with it until the doctors decide to deal with it.

On Tuesday we went to the hospital ER because when she woke up the room was spinning.  The first hospital noticed brain swelling and that her vp shunt was broke. The first hospital sent her to a different hospital since they didn't have neurosurgery there.

So we went to the second hospital.  They noticed that nobody looked at the vp shunt in over 30 years, so they don't believe its an issue and because she is not in severe pain they are not concerned with the brain swelling.

So they decided it had to be deep inner ear inflammation.  When the ears nose and throat doctor check they didn't see anything, but when the neurosurgeon asked if it was possible they said yes.

Since the ER visit I have learned that it only happens when she is starting to lay down and for about 3 hours after waking up.

Typical Vertigo I get it , usually caused by an imbalance of the inner ear, my Doctor has looked many times and can't see anything.

No idea what a shunt is, I don't have one.

So did they give her meds?
