Apple TV help?

I recently turned my old monitor into a TV and attempted to use my Apple TV with it, my old monitor uses VGA so I had to get an adaptor. When I turn the Apple TV on only for a split second it appears that it will show on screen but then the screen shows a message which says that it can’t detect a VGA connection, while this is happening my Apple TV begins to blink, anyone know what to do here?

The gen 4 apple TV doesn't have any power out over HDMI, so any HDMI to VGA adapter will need a separate power input.

You need VGA to HDMI adapter with USB power input like see below

Probably a bad adapter, or the wrong type. Even the right adapter would not work with a lot of content, as it wouldn't support HDCP.
