Should chess be updated?

Chess is so easy because we know all the moves, like the infamous check mate move. I think we should update the game to make it harder.

I see my grand kids playing fortnite and that game looks harder than chess because there is no check mate

There are lots of chess variants.  It's been reinvented over and over again.  Examples:  Black Hole chess, Ultima and Maharaja.

There are numerous variants of chess, but none has yet gained enough popularity to replace chess as the international game.

As @PeacefulHeart" said, Bobby Fischer proposed to update the game of chess by randomising the arrangement of pieces on the back row (subject to two requirements).

Jose Capablanca (another world champion) proposed to update chess by adding two new pieces: the archbishop (combining the power of the bishop and the knight) and the chancellor (combining the power of the rook and the knight).

The current game of F.I.D.E. chess arose in western Europe, and there are many regional variants of chess, including:

    - Chinese chess (Xiang Qi)

    - Korean chess (Jang Gi)

    - Japanese chess (Shogi)

    - Thai chess (Makruk)

    - Burmese chess (Sittuyin)

    - Persian chess (Shatranj)

    - Bulgarian chess (Bolyar chess)

    - Macedonion chess (Abagoren chess)

Dr Ernst Maack proposed a three dimensional form of chess called Raumschach. There is also a three dimensional chess game played in Star Trek: though Gene Roddenberry never actually develpoed rules for the game (fans made them up later).

Look at this website for a comprehensive list of chess variants, then pick one which you think should replace FIDE chess. Or invent your own. But it's more difficult than you think. The current game of chess was developed over many centuries.

It already has been, with Blitz & Random Chess. No one knows all the moves, there is no  'infamous' checkmate move, and Chess is not easy.

The infamous check mate move?  There are hundreds, if not thousands of such moves, given that the term "check mate"  is just a statement that it is mathematically impossible (Not just improbable) for one player to win.

Check mate is how you know the game is over.  Fortnite has a check mate move too, it is called winning the game.

Fischer random chess, also known as Chess960, is a variation of the game of chess invented by former world chess champion Bobby Fischer.
