What sort of clock did they use on Good Friday?
It is approaching 3pm on Good Friday and I am 9 years old, seated in a pew, in my local catholic church.
The atmosphere is very grim, we have endured an hour or more of "STAND UP!," commands, followed by "the 'Xth' sorrowful mystery of the cross" where the priest droned a litany of the agony of the crucifixion, as portrayed by another one of the "stations of the cross" images, which were hung all around the church walls.
Then it was "KNEEL DOWN!" and the show moved on a bit more.
I had lost interest by now and was admiring my friends new wristwatch which she had been given for her birthday that day.
We then reached the point at which a two minute silence was declared, during which we were to silently pray for the now dead Jesus.
It was declared that he had died at exactly 3pm on the day of his crucifixion.
I was lost, I could not pray, my mind was confused.
How did they know the exact time?
Did they have wrist watches too?
Or did a church bell ring at that time to let them know?
So, does the catholic church still feed this stuff to its faithful?
Perhaps it was a sun dial?
No, that wouldn't have worked because the sky is supposed to have clouded over when Jesus died....

Well, I dont know what years you are talking about, but that was pretty much how it was in my catholic church in England back in the 1950's and 60's.
Even my mother once voiced the same question to a priest and received a rather curt rebuff from him.
"You do not question you faith, or the holy catholic litany!" She was told.
I abandoned religion many years ago but I would hope that they are no longer spouting stuff like this as "fact".
The Catholic church was full of rubbish like this when I was a child.
If it still is, nobody should let them anywhere near their kids!
