Your whole life will change drastically for sometime until you and the dog settle into a routine that is comfortable for both of you.
You will need to exercise and train the dog and spend money on its food and vets fees.
There IS no guarantee that you and the dog will be compatible, so choose your canine friend carefully, taking into account your temperament and the dogs /pups temperament. (you don`t say if you are getting an adult dog or a puppy)!!!
The experience can be vary very different between getting an adult dog and a puppy.
If you are inexperienced in handling dogs, I advise NOT to get a dominant or excitable natured dog or pup.
Go for the more submissive or laid back natured dog.

I have had dogs all my life from babyhood. Nothing new when I get another dog. As a Canine Behaviorist now, I know most all there is to know about dogs. I can say they do require lots of attention & training & it is not as easy as some make it out to be, especially if it is your first dog. Study, study & google everything. Learn as much as you can about raising a puppy & how to train it.

For most people, getting their first dog will mean a complete culture change. You will be taking on a living being who will depend totally on YOU for everything, from food/water, exercise, grooming, to just your company. Dogs are social animals and need to be with you as much as possible. So your current life-style will change starting with having to get home 'for the dog'.
And puppies have huge demands which not everybody appreciates.

#1 concern: Think it through. Think long term. Your dog will be your companion for many years. Is it realistic to take in a dog? Do you have a support network? Be sure that your life is dog friendly before you make the decision.

Puppies have the attention span of a demented gnat, and a tired dog, is a better behaved dog....because he has NO choice.
