Why is a government job better than a private job?

It is almost impossible to get fired and the benefits are astronomical since they don't have to worry about profit and loss.

Government jobs usually have much better benefits.  When I worked for the VA, we had vacation time (pro rated according to GS level, mine was 3 weeks a year), plus sick time and personal days. All that time off could be saved year after year (it was cumulative and didn't roll over at the end of the year). A janitor who never used vacation or sick time or personal days could retire with a huge lump sum payment. The VA had binding arbitration with employees, and were protected by the union, if they chose to join it.

Why has something to do with the government being less exploitative  than the private sector.
