are heart palpitations the same as fast heart beat?

I have been having heart palpitations for the past few days and will visit the doctor tomorrow, i am just wondering right away tho, if you are having heart palpitations does that speed up your heart rate? is it possible to have normal heart rate but still have palpitations ?

Yes, you can have palpitations and a normal heart rate. Different mechanisms for rate and rhythm. The heart electrical system is pretty complex

Palpitations are times when the heart beatings faster then normal.  You can cause a palpitation by simple things like running until you are out of breath, getting scared, etc.  You can have a normal heart beat and still get a palpitation through an experience like those.  They can also be caused by medications and eating certain foods.

They are temporary in nature, and usually harmless.  However they can be an indication of something more serious.  So you do need to get checked if you are having them at odd times.
