Where can I find out the origin of a word in published books / journal articles?

I know there is a website which says how often the word appears in print by each year. I know Merriam Webster have a version but this is not the one I am looking for as the word I want to trace is not in their dictionary and I know I have looked up this word before.

    You can do a search by typing the word in question plus the word "etymology" in a search engine.
