I think the safest risk would have been for him to plead to 3rd degree murder and ask for the minimum sentence. He can face 40 years if convicted of murder in Minnesota state court. Also he can face federal charges due to tax evasion and if he is trialed in the federal courts. I think he knows that if he serves any time in prison, he will have to be isolated or he can be killed in prison.
