If they have truly changed their behavior, it will take some time to move past the long history of past behavior.

Yes, it is normal to wonder if the abuser will really stop when they say they will, specially if you have heard this before.
What ACTIONS is he taking to deal with his anger problems? To work out better ways to handle stresses or frustrations? To heal past hurts? Is he getting help to change or does he think just saying it will make it happen.
