Are you having memory problems as you age, if so, might the forgetfulness be caused by something other than age?

My memory becomes worse as each day goes by.  I sometimes have to think "What have I eaten today" and can never remember until I look at the dishes in the kitchen sink and that usually answers my question. If there are no dishes in the sink it usually means that I haven't eaten.

If I write a shopping list and have only 3 items on it I will still forget some of them if I left the piece of paper at home. Once upon a time I could have remembered 20 things on my list because the act of writing it kept the information in my head, even when I forgot to take the list with me.

Ageing isn't much fun is it?

    Yes.

Even at middle age (40 to 60 yrs) we can develop symptoms of dementia.

And a lot of this early onset can be caused by alcoholism, use of marijuana, exposure to heavy metals and working in some factory settings where we are exposed to toxins.

Some of it is hereditary and we have other relatives who suffered early onset.

Some of it can be caused by mini strokes or Transient Ischemic attacks, low blood pressure or other medical conditions.   Some prescribed medications can do it, too.

Some of it can be related to stress, preoccupation with something, anxiety or even being in a hurry.

As we age, we do better to take care of ourselves and our mental conditions.  We get outside more and enjoy a little light exercise and we socialize more.  Be good to yourself.

  • ageing and wisdom which come with it is great, youth is wasted on the young.
