Calculate the solubility of MgCO_3 in .10M Mg(NO_3)_2?

The Ksp for MgCO_3=1.1e-10. What is the solubility for MgCO_3 in pure water?

a)1.1e-10M

b)1.1e-8M

c)1.1e-7M

d)1.1e-6M

e)1.1e-5M

                                      *I got e

Re-calculate the solubility of MgCO_3 from above, but now in .010M Mg(NO_3)_2.

a)1.1e-10M

b)1.1e-8M

c)1.1e-7M

d)1.1e-6M

e)1.1e-5M

    Equilibrium: MgCO3(s) <--> Mg2+(aq) + CO32-(aq)

    Ksp = [Mg2+] [CO32-] = 1.1X10^-10

    Let [Mg2+] = x = [CO32-] = molar solubility. Then,

    1.1X10^-10 = x^2

    x = 1.05X10^-5 M

    e is the best answer

    Now in a 0.010 M Mg(NO3)2 solution, [Mg2+] = 0.010 M.

    Ksp = 1.1X10^-10 = 0.01 [CO32-]

    [CO32-] = 1.1X10^-8 M = solubility

    b) is the correct answer.
