Have you read the Bible (moving this to Arts & Humanities/Books if it goes into Religion)?

Updated 5 days ago:

I became a Christian believer many years ago in my late 20s and I believe it's God's Word.  I usually skim over the parts about building the temple and the good kings/bad kings and mostly stay in the New Testament, Psalms and Proverbs now.

My point is, this being the end of YA, to encourage people who haven't read it to give it a fair chance to speak to their hearts.  My belief is that it holds the answers to life's most important questions to those willing to receive them.

Since Jesus said to go into all the world and preach the gospel, I thought it's time to go into all the categories here.  (Mark 16:15)

To Marli:  I fully agree with you and hope you will receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior soon if you have not already done so; as per John 1:12, Romans 10:13 and 5:8.  I have been encouraged in my faith through various Baptist churches (some of which are still good) and urge you to visit a few if you seek Christian fellowship.  May  God bless you.  I hope to see you up there!

To Anonymous:  I don't get anything out of how the temple was built, except that God is very meticulous about how He does things and how He grows His church.  As far as good kings/bad kings, I get the idea that it is indeed better to do right than to do wrong and that there are consequences.  I don't just read the "parts I like."  I continue to read "through" the Bible as I have  done for the last 40 years (at least 7 times) but  I am a  slow reader.  Right now I am in Genesis again and Acts.

And yes, it would be wrong to only read the parts that one "likes."

Yes I have. I have been profoundly affected by the New Testament and the Psalms. I have questioned it, been comforted by its words, been agitated by it.

I think we should both keep rereading it.

Yes God is good.  I agree everyone should get to know the Word it does touch each part of life and you will be a better person for learning God's Word.

Yes, I was raised an Evangelical Lutheran and had bible lessons in school. It's one of the reasons why I am not a Christian today.

I will say, however, that if you truly believe that the bible is God's Word, then isn't it wrong to just be reading the parts you like?

I have to be honest, not much of it, no.

Yup.  I was raised Catholic and my husband was raised Presbyterian, so we each had different versions.  We've read both, as well as the Koran, the Bhagavad Gita, and the Ramayana.  We're both atheists.

    Yes, I have.

    What is your point?

Yes, I have in all manner of translations and more than a few studies.  I'm not religious, I simply don't have the wiring to be religious, but I think the Bible is the single most important piece of literature of our civilisation and to not take it seriously is like deliberately choosing to only watch tv in black & white or listen to the radio so low that you can't catch every word.  It's so profoundly influenced generations that without studying it, at least to some degree, you could never get the full intentions of countless artists, writers, thinkers and revolutionaries.  I can't say that I enjoyed it though, nor to be honest have I found any part of it to be profound or moving.
