Was there any point in imposing sanctions on Russia?

They're not communist anymore. Shouldn't they be our ally? Whether or not Russia reclaim some of the territory they lost when the Soviet Union collapsed has little effect on the rest of the world. They never have been and never will be anything more than a regional power. The Soviet Union was the main power in Eastern Europe during WWII. It shouldn't come as a surprise that they continue to be the main power in the region to this today. Since Eastern Europe isn't near the Atlantic, it doesn't really make sense for them to be part of NATO anyway. It would make more sense for Morocco or Tunisia to be part of NATO.

The sanctions on Russia were never because they were communist, but because they were agressive expansionist.
Even if they are not 'communist' anymore, can you agree that they are still imperialistically aggressive, and would not hesitate to invade and annex neighbors?

Actually, Russia still controls the world's 2nd largest concentration of ICBMs.  Hardly a regional power.  And their continuous Gov't supported persistent cyber attacks are hardly the behavior of an ally.  If Russia wants to be an ally, they need to start acting like one.
