The ONLY difference - a positive pregnancy test.

There is NOTHING special about any certain kind of "spotting" that makes it obvious to tell the difference between what is causing it.

Breakthrough bleeding (which is any bleeding that happens when a period is not expected) happens for MANY reasons and the only way to know if pregnancy is part of the reason would be to get a positive pregnancy test.

Bleeding during pregnancy is NOT "normal" and a doctor should ALWAYS be consulted if you have a positive pregnancy test but you are still seeing some bleeding.

Implantation bleeding is actually NOT that common but would be a possible reason to have some spotting before a period and have it related to pregnancy.  If it is implantation bleeding - you would get the positive test in about five to seven days after seeing it.  Implantation bleeding is often absorbed by the uterine lining and never makes it out of the body.
