    Let us imagine that this was somehow possible.  You would already see that a fast enough bullet doesn't shatter a pane of glass.  In the same way the sand would bore a nice neat clean sand sized hole through the earth and would continue hardly slowed at all.

    The universe would cease to exist because getting a grain of sand to travel at a speed so near the speed of light would require more energy than contained in the entire universe.
