What part of "The Satanic Verses" by Salman Rushdie got Muslims so upset?

When the Quraysh tribe offers peace with Muslims if the prophet Mohammad (pbuh) will compromise monotheism and include an ok to three of their goddesses.  This of itself is historical fact. What enangered Muslims was Rushdie's portrayal of the Prophet during this period as being a wimp--weak and tempted, also arrogant, etc.
