Why would my girlfriends mom blame me for her daughter gaining weight?

My girlfriend whos 5ft 3in tall last year weighed roughly 115 lbs but as the year went on she slowly gained weight to her current weight of 138 lbs. The thing I noticed was the symptoms of an under active thyroid, I took the intitive because I was scared once I read what could have happened. Since we have made healthy lifestyle changes and try to work out as much as we can. I just wish her mom would let her be and be happy shes getting healthier. Shes hurt my girlfriend so much with the criticism of how she looks. To me shes so beautiful and I love her.

Update:

She put on 23 lbs in 12 months, when she showed signs of hypothyroidism I got her medical help.

Most hypothyroidism is caused by a diet high in added sugars and white flour products and low in insoluble fiber AKA not only whole foods, water, unsweetened teas and unflavored milk AKA the human diet.
