  • How can I recover my hard drive?

I have a SATA drive with a USB adapter (as my PC doesn't support SATA). Recently the adapter was damaged so I bought a new one. However, when I connect the drive to the new adapter to the PC Windows tells me the drive is unformatted. I have not re-formatted it. Since the drive seems to spin quite normally with no nasty noises I'm guessing that it is not damaged and for some reason Windows is not recognising the NTFS indexing. There is something like 800Gb on the drive which should be easily readable once Windows recognises the file system. Any suggestions on how to recover the files?

  • I'm translating a sentence from German to English ....?

"Schlepper fuhren stromauf und stromab, es wimmelte nur so, besonders vor den Hafeneinfahrten." which makes sense to me as "Tug-boats drove upstream and downstream, bustling particularly in front of the harbour entrances."

But, the "es wimmelte nur so" means (I think) "it bustled like so"

So, what does the "es wimmelte nur so" actually mean?

  • Along the Western Front in WW1, how far away were the civilians who lived in the region?

I've seen photographs of the trenches but that's all they show - the trenches and a lot of mud. Were the French and Belgian civilians who lived and worked in the vicinity fairly close - say a kilometre or two - or a long way off - say 20 or 30 kilometres or more?

  • It is axiomatic that if a government prints more money then we get inflation ....?

It is axiomatic that if a government prints more money then we get inflation because more money is chasing the same amount of goods and services.

My question though is how does this actually happen? The government prints more money but my salary and the wages and salaries of everyone else in the country stays the same. How does the additional printed money physically get into the money system in order to impact prices?

  • What happened to Timothy Davie?

Back in the 1970s an English teenager (14 or 15 I think) named Timothy Davie was arrested smuggling drugs through Turkey and put in a Turkish prison. I remember the outcry in the British press as the time - it was before 1974 as I was still at school and I left in 1974.

I can't find anything about him on the net. I was wondering if anyone knew anything about what happened to him.

  • Whats the best way to take down a brick wall without damaging the bricks?

I have a low brick wall - about 3 feet high - which I want to take down. Using a sledge hammer would be easy but I need to keep the bricks so they can be cleaned and re-used. So, what's the best way to take down the wall without damaging the bricks?

  • Grayscales and TV/Monitor contrast ratio?

The contrast ratio is the ability of the monitor or TV to separate black from white and various shades of gray. If the ratio is low then say 80% gray to 100% gray (ie pure black) will merge and be indistinguishable whereas if the ratio is higher then 80 to 85% may be distinguishable but 90-100% gray will merge together.

It seems to me that there should be a mathematical expression of the relationship between the contrast ratio and the percentage of distinguishable gray - so, for example, I could calculate that a ratio of 250:1 will distinguish 0% to 80% gray and a ratio of 500:1 would distinguish 0% to 90% or whatever the actual values are.

Any ideas what that mathematical relationship would be ?

  • How do I match the image in the camera display with the image in the computer screen?

The photo in the 3" display on my digital camera looks just fine but on my computer monitor it is dark no matter how I adjust the brightness and contrast of the monitor.

Should I darken the camera display to match the monitor and then increase the exposure so it looks good?

    Any other suggestions?

  • What relevance was Princess Diana ?

I've just bought a book "50 Women Who Changed The World" which includes women such as Florence Nightingale, Benazir Bhutto, Elizabeth I and Emily Pankhurst.

For some reason Princess Diana is one of the 50. Apart from being a blonde who married a Prince and dying unexpectedly what are her claims to fame? How did Diana "change the world"?

  • Prohibition in USA in the 1920s?

According to Wikipedia, Prohibition was passed into law by the 18th Amendment to the Constitution and the police were charged with the responsibility of enforcing it. In 1933 Prohibition was declared a failure and repealed.

Would it be true to say that Prohibition was a failure, not because people liked to drink alcohol but because the police both failed to enforce Prohibition and, through corruption, actually encouraged anti-Prohibition activities ?

After all, many countries and regions are "dry" so there is nothing inherently impossible in the idea of Prohibition.
