  • Amazon Kindle Reviews?

Can a Kindle Unlimited or Kindle Online Lending Library customer leave a review of a Kindle book? I've asked in the Kindle Direct Publishing community, and have no answers. And, of course, "Help" answers the questions the company wishes you had asked instead of the ones to which you need answers.

  • MS Word Track Changes question?

Someone used track changes in editing a document. All of the underlining/in-text indication of a change (insert or delete) has disappeared, but the bars remain on the left side of the document. I can find nothing in the indicated lines to accept or reject.

How do I get rid of the bars on the left side of the document?

  • Amazon Kindle options?

My early-version Kindle abruptly shut down and went to a screen reading "Amazon Kindle." The start slide does not work, nor do any buttons.

    1. Can it be salvaged?

    2. Can I re-download books I have paid for but not yet finished reading?

  • How to find MacAfee quarantined files?

At some point I was deceived into downloading an advertising application that is driving me nuts. Every few online mouse clicks a new window opens with advertising. Every photo is covered with some pop-up leading to more advertising. Most windows have advertising plastered all over them, and trying to remove the ads opens yet more web pages of advertising.

I ran a MacAfee Internet Security scan and it told me I had a program I probably didn't want, "Advertising" something. It recommended putting it in quarantine. I did. No help. Ran the scan again, same result, put it in quarantine, no help. Just ran the scan again, it found no problems. Of course, the problem persists.

I've tried returning to a reset point, no help.

MacAfee's website contains no records of "quarantine." Downloading the MacAfee Virtual Tech Advisor results in "everything is perfectly fine."

How do I deal with this?

    Thanks

  • Does anyone else want an apology?

I objected on technical grounds to the Affordable Care Act. I want poor people to have access to affordable quality health care. The ACA is simply a blunder that will not do that and may actually increase the rolls of the uninsured. For my opposition I’m told that I don’t want poor people to have health care.

I objected to the “Financial Reform Bill” because it did not touch the two critical issues in the global economic meltdown. These were the “too big to fail” banks and the unregulated Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac Mafia. The Bill did cement in place the unassailable positions of the megabanks and raise the cost of capital to small businesses. For my opposition I’m told I hate poor people and love Wall Street bankers.

I am unconvinced (not the same thing as a “doubter”) about anthropogenic global warming. Mars and Jupiter have been warming in parallel with the earth. The model on which the conclusion is based stopped working more than 15 years ago. Sea ice is unchanged in thirty years, polar bear populations have been increasing every year over the same period, and global glacier mass is unchanged in several centuries. Carbon dioxide is an inefficient greenhouse gas, and humans cause a minuscule percentage of the gas emitted into the atmosphere every year. For wanting actual science applied to the issue, I am told I don’t believe in science.

I objected to dismantling the No Child Left Behind Act. During its effective period the achievement gap between white and black students narrowed by three percentage points a year. Since President Obama kept his promise to the teachers unions to dismantle it, the achievement gap has grown by one percent per year. For wanting to keep something that benefits minority students, I’m told that I hate teachers and that I’m a racist for objecting to something a black man did.

I receive both Social Security and Medicare benefits. I want the system reformed in light of longer lifespans. That will likely cost me money. So be it. At its current rate it will go de jure bankrupt instead of its de facto current bankruptcy. I want the system fixed so that my children and others in future generations can benefit from these valuable programs. For wanting to save them I am told that I want to destroy Medicare and Social Security, and want to throw grandma off a cliff.

I objected to the Internal Revenue Service targeting groups based on their political beliefs. That is what we real liberals do – we protect liberty for all. I objected to the Attorney General perjuring himself, either in an affidavit for a warrant or in sworn testimony before Congress. For objecting I’m told that I am fomenting unrest about phony scandals.

I objected to the “Stimulus Package” because it threw taxpayer money at a politician’s supporters and stimulated absolutely zero economic activity. For my objection I’m told that I hate poor people and, once again, am a racist for objecting the something a black man did.

This list goes on and on. I want the same things that this current Administration says it wants. I do not support the way the Administration is going about those things. That is different from not wanting to achieve those same ends. Yet, any disagreement about “how” is turned on its head and I am accused of not wanting good things to happen, being evil, being selfish, etc, etc, etc. In short, I am demonized for disagreeing with methods while supporting aims.

Does anyone else believe she or he is owed an apology?

  • Examples of user-malevolent software?

What examples do you have of user-malevolent software that has a reasonably large user base? Of course, Windows 8 is the prime example, and I'm already on it.

Full disclosure: I intend to make money from this.

  • Can we identify a hero and a villain in Martin-Zimmerman?

    My own answer is yes.

The hero (heroine) is the last hold-out juror. She repeatedly read the laws, reviewed the testimony, read the jury instructions, and engaged in reasoned discourse during deliberation according to the only information we have available today. When she finally, in accordance with her responsibility, took 30 minutes to reach her final conclusion, her heroine status was firmly established. Her actual conclusion is in my view irrelevant. I would consider her a heroine regardless of her conclusion.

The villain (villainess?) is the special prosecutor. On appointment she had the views of the lead detective and the prosecutor for the jurisdiction where the offense occurred. In my experience, those views screamed "proceed with caution." Instead she chose not to present the case to a grand jury. Prosecutors I know never skip that step when proceeding with caution. Instead she chose a charge with an incredibly high bar for conviction based on usable evidence that was at best weak. Again, prosecutors I know do not characterize this as "proceeding with caution." She elected not to charge criminally negligent homicide where the usable evidence gave her a good chance of a conviction. "Proceeding with caution" should, in my opinion, include choosing a charge with a decent probability of conviction where there is a socially-important reason to right a wrong as best possible within the law.

The lynch mob was calling, and this politician appears to have answered the call. Who knows, a popular prosecution (damn the evidence, full speed ahead!) and a popular conviction ("beyond a reasonable doubt" does not appear to have been a consideration) might propel her to higher office. She could become Attorney General, she might become Governor, and who knows? First woman President?

Martin was a needless victim, which is not the same thing as a hero. Zimmerman was a perpetrator, which is not the same thing as a convicted felon or villain.

This story needs a hero and a villain. I've identified mine. I am interested in reasoned discourse on this topic. If your contribution is race-based bigotry and intellectual laziness, I beg you not to participate. Adults only, please.

  • If the right to privacy does not exist?

The government surveillance of Americans as part of its search for intelligence on possible terrorism assumes that the right to privacy is limited.

Without taking a position on that stance, what does this do to Roe v Wade? The legalization of abortion on demand depended on an implicit "Right to Privacy" in the U.S. Constitution.

Will the Obama Administration inadvertently create the grounds on which to overturn Roe v Wade?

  • Can going over the fiscal cliff be good for the country?

The "fiscal cliff" deals with tax rates and government spending.

For the first, it would take us back to the Clinton-era tax rates for everybody. It will be difficult to avoid seeing that the Bush tax cuts favored the poor over the rich. The rich's taxes were cut by less than 10%. Lower-middle-class got a tax cut of 50%. The working poor got a tax cut of 100%. Perhaps some truth in reporting (versus spinning) might come out of it.

The second is the catastrophic impact of reduced Federal spending. I fail to see how pointing out that we are sustaining the Potemkin Village by printing money to buy up our own debt is a bad thing.

Will going over the fiscal cliff hurt? Of course it will. We are going to have to hurt some time. I'd rather hurt today with a chance to educate the public than have my grandchildren living off of aid from Brazil.

  • How do you see VP Biden working with President Romney?

Real Clear Politics gives Romney 191 electoral votes and Obama 201. Most of the toss-ups are toss-ups only when including polling data from August and early September. Probability is that Romney takes Florida (29), North Carolina (15), Virginia (13), Colorado (9), Nevada (6) for 263. If he takes Iowa (6) while Obama takes the remainder, they both have 269 electoral votes, so the House chooses the President with each state having one vote. Enter President Romney. This is a likely scenario, not necessarily my personal preference.

Since the electoral vote for VP is also tied, the Senate chooses the VP. Biden is re-elected. Again, this is the likely scenario, not my personal preference.

  • Working with a GPS tracking device help?

I need to be able to attach a GPS tracking device to a car. So far so simple. I also need to know immediately if the device is disabled or detached. Maybe not so simple. The car's operator will often be highly motivated to prevent me from knowing the car's current location. Any suggestions will help.

    Thanks.

  • How can one tell if a phone number is a pre-paid cell?

A client will do far better in his business if he has a simple way to tell if a phone number is a pre-paid cell. The FCC gives blocks of 10,000 numbers to providers; can one tell from the three-digit prefix (not the area code, the three digits following the area code) if this is a block for pre-paid cellphones? Yes, it will probably be different based on the area code. I'm rather stumped on where to start on this.

    Thanks

  • Is there an authoritative source on Messiah complex?

This is not a disorder recognized in the DSM-IV. It goes by a dizzying array of names. Internet search engines largely provide links to personal rants about a politician, or to the same www.wikipedia.org information endlessly repeated in other websites.

I am not a health care professional. I am part of an organization which is important to its members. The highly charismatic leader recently became enraged (not merely angry, but what I can only describe as enraged and viciously so) when an organization member sent him a private message covering a wide variety of topics, including that one of the leader's statements appeared disingenuous. The member abruptly left, but shared the communications with me before doing so.

The leader ignored all parts of the initial message excepting the attack on his character. The leader's message went from self-vindication to a claim that his own integrity, character and intent are perfectly pure and not subject to question by anyone. That became a personal attack on the member followed by multiple statements that were patently untrue. Throughout the email the leader's spelling, grammar and syntax steadily deteriorated until it appeared that the writer was not a well-educated middle-aged man but a barely-educated teenage boy.

The member (mistakenly, I would say) followed-up with a second message begging the leader to re-read the initial message because the leader had not acknowledged anything but the attack, and in doing so had mis-quoted the first message. The leader's second reply was horrifying. Me Me Me Me Me; the member is a liar and not worth talking to. Abrupt changes in fonts indicated a copy-paste extravaganza to "prove" that the first message said specific things; the quoted text in fact disproves the hypotheses. Grammar, syntax and spelling deteriorated steadily; finally the leader defended himself against a wide array of charges that were never made. I concluded that we're not in Kansas any more.

My own personal issue is easily fixed: leave, but unlike my friend share nothing with anyone. This does nothing for my several hundred friends for whom the organization is very important. Most importantly it does nothing for the leader. What little peer-reviewed literature I can find indicates that Messiah complex (which just might not exist at all) has a very high suicide rate.

Any help here in finding an authoritative (and if possible peer-reviewed) source on Messiah complex will be helpful.

I need representative social network sites done in Drupal for a client. If he can see examples then he can make a better-informed decision about a new effort for his business.
