When teaching adults with intellectual disabilities it is necessary to think outside the box and try and find creative ways to teach that are more concrete. Do you have any suggestions

  • How do we learn to become more pschologically resillient?

In today's world where nearly everything is regulated, legislated etc. we tend to be trying to protect ourselves from everything and perhaps this is making us less resilient. It seems that every time a person meets a hard situation they either fall apart or run off to a counsellor! How can we become more resilient and less needy and less reliant on laws, regulations, counsellors and other crutches to cope with life.

  • Do constant negative messages affect ones health?

ie. If told over and over you will die from cancer will this make a person more likely to develop cancer?

if told over and over you will get gangrene will this make the person more likely to develop the condition?

What are your thoughts on such negative messages about health?

If the message is a written message does it increase or decrease the liklihood of the condition developing?

If the written message is accompanied by graphic pictures of the condition does that increase or decrease the liklihood of the condition developing...

Just how affected is our health by the messages we receive?

  • Do you agree that smokers should be refused some elective surgery and why?

It appears there is a push here in Australia to discirminate against smokers who want elective surgery. The reason given is that smokers are slightly more inclined to suffer infection following surgery and so cost the health system more.

As a smoker I know that more than 70% of the retail cost of cigarettes and tobacco in Australia is payment of taxes. This is in addition to the 10% GST and in addition to income tax and in addition to all the other taxes we have....

Smokers who smoke a pack of 25 cigarettes a day for a year spend something like $4015 for their pleasure every year. Of this amount nearly $3000 is in taxes.......

Soooooooo My point is that we contribute an awful lot to the taxes i this country that is money going into the health system that would not be there if we all stopped smoking tomorrow...

Do you still think we should be denied what is available to others?

  • I think it would be useful for many people to learn lots of ways to say "No."?

I find that learning to say "No" is anultimate de-stressor. Please add the many ways you say No to others requests and demands. Here are some of mine.

    "No thank you."

"that is not something I am interested in"

"I really cant fit that in this week"

"perhaps ________ would be interested in doing that for you." (Name someone who might enjoy doing it instead of you.)

    "My calendar is full."

"I think you can manage that yourself"

    "Not any time soon."

    "no!"

"I will let you know if I decide to do that."

    "I can't afford that"

"You need to ask someone else"

"Have you tried doing it yourself?"

"That is not something I like doing"

" I dont see the need for me to be involved"

    " I can't help you with that."

"I would help if I could but I don't have the time."

    "Please ask someone else"

It is tiresome.

  • Do any of these words or phrases sound familiar to you?

I had a vision and during the vision I saw myself as a woman living in a wooden hut in a stony village and I was singing this song.

(I have written this the way the words sound)

    Kuramena nara semo

    kuramena nara co

Co co la-nee co co ra-mee

Co co ra-mee co co ru

I am very interested to discover if the words or phrases in this song mean anything to anyone any where in the world.
