  • Where to stay on Oahu?

I'm going to Schoffield Barracks on Oahu in March. If I fly my wife in and extend my trip, where do we stay and what's a few local things to do?

We might take a tour, but we'd be just as good renting a car or scooters or something. I don't think we'd try to island hop unless we can save a bunch of $$ on another island.

  • Can we start saying 'Saddam lied, people died' now?

    From the Reuters:

"Former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein kept up the illusion that he had weapons of mass destruction before 2003 because he did not think the United States would invade, an FBI agent who questioned him said."

  • Christians, who do you want to worship with?

I see a lot of really large churches, a lot of smaller churches trying to be large churches and at the same time there is a growing house church movement.

Would you rather worship with a handful of committed Christians, thousands of people who may or may not be Christian or some other answer?

Sounds ridiculous to me, but for the sake of being open minded, someone please tell me this is more than paying someone to plant trees in the rainforest.

  • freedom in Islamic countries?

Don't people realize that the liberties they cherish so much, like continually insulting their own country and it's predominant religion, are ILLEGAL in muslim countries?

    From the news today:

"ALEXANDRIA, Egypt (Reuters) - An Alexandria court convicted an Egyptian blogger on Thursday for insulting both Islam and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and sentenced him to four years in jail over his writings on the Internet."

How can you read that and still think that somehow there is moral equivalence between the USA, where you have the freedom to insult your president and any religion you choose, and countries where that thing can get you sentenced to 4 years in a prison where you have no rights at all.

Under Sharia law, women are property. If they are raped, they can be killed for bringing dishonor on the family. That religion is the antithesis of everything Americans claim to love.

Why do people continue to give it respect?

  • Does science apply to 'global warming'?

The scientific method goes: observation, hypothesis, testing -> theory. Over time, with significant testing and no counter examples, theory becomes accepted fact.

We can observe a small rise in average temperatures over the last couple hundred years. The earth has warmed a bit - on the order of a few degrees, 2 or 3 if I recall correctly. Even this is debated on a number of points that seem reasonable, but even if accurate the warming is not as dire as a casual observer would expect from all the alarmists running about. One would think the earth had warmed 10 degrees in the last 5 years from listening to the media.

What is really debateable is the cause. The ASSUMPTION that CO2 and other gasses are the cause has not been sufficiently tested. Indeed, the attempt to find a cause can ruin's one career.

So why all the pressure to not test the hypothesis that 'greenhouse gases' are the cause?

  • sacredness of marriage in catholicism?

A catholic asked recently about how could other churches say they value marriage when only catholic church has an annulment process.

First, it blows my mind to think that someone could ask, in apparent honesty, "Since we have a process of undoing a marriage and you do not, how can you say you value marriage?"

Second, and the point of this question, is how can anyone annul a marriage for any reason other than 'fornication'?

I'll let the answerer define 'fornication'. Most bible scholars I read say it is a broad term related to sexual impurity and would apply to adultery as well as other sexual sins. I know from the bible that a Jew in the OT could divorce his wife for adultery and he could divorce her if he found that she wasn't a virgin before marriage.

    One verse:

"But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery." Matt. 5:32

  • How are fossils created?

Full disclosure: I am a creationist, but I have always wondered about this one. I assume there is a theory and/or repeatable method, but I've never heard it. I'm fairly certain that you can't just leave a carcass on the ground any ol' place and get a fossil, so what are the conditions that must be present and what is the likelihood of those conditions existing in sufficient quantity to generate the fossil record?

Please, no flames, no "Well, yeah, how do you explain..." replies. This is an honest question and I promise to read any links provided. (A reasonable number of them anyway...)

  • What social skills?

Why is the phrase 'social skills' the first protest of public school defenders? What social skills do you learn at school that you don't learn elsewhere? It's not like homeschooled kids never interact with another human until they go to college.

Is learning to fight, swear, gossip, talk bad about authority, question your parents' morality, etc. important enough to you to force your kids into a failing school system?

If you have other reasons to public school, that's fine, but why criticize homeschooling with the social skills question?

  • Evolutionists: How do you explain the layers of earth?

The layers of the earth are one color and composition for so much depth, then suddenly another for so much depth, then suddenly another. As has often been observed, these layers may be global in scope.

What happened to the soil that it suddenly changes composition over and over and over with almost zero transition?
