  • My refrigerator is ridiculously loud, it might be the compressor? see details?

I moved into a town house about three months ago. The house came with a refrigerator, which was manufactured in March 2007. It is the loudest refrigerator I have ever been around. It has a freezer on top, fridge on bottom (not a side by side model). It's a Whirlpool Model ET8CH(or 4)KXK007. It makes a loud high pitched humming noise for about 10 or 15 minutes, "shuts off", is silent for 10 or 15 minutes, then the cycle repeats. There are no hissing, rattling, popping sounds. The sound is about the same loudness the whole 10 or 15 minutes. There are no problems with the actual temperature of the freezer or fridge. It is so loud I can hear it upstairs in the opposite part of the house (ie the east part of the house and the fridge is downstairs in the west of the house) and it is giving me headaches.

I've done some research online and called a few people who think it's probably the compressor. The refrigerator is not under warranty, according to the Whirlpool customer service rep. The fridge is about a year and a half old but I wasn't the original owner.

My options are to have someone come out and diagnose the problem for $70, then an undetermined amount for labor and parts OR buy a new refrigerator. Money is really tight right now.

Any experience or serious advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you!
