I turned 38 at Christmas '07. I'm married with three grown step-children and now a two year old son. I'm a stay-at-home Mom these days. I am a recovering addict with nearly eighteen years of sobriety. My drug of choice was cocaine. I'm not an expert at anything and you'll never hear me claim to be. I DO have very strong opinions and when I give you advice it comes from years worth of experience doing EVERYTHING stupid and wrong and then having to learn that my way was wrong and to do things the right way. Such is the nature of the substance abuser. Animals are my passion. I run a small animal rescue in small town america(pop 3500). I saved my first animal, a mole, when I was six years old. This is my calling. Call me crazy but I'm "connected" to these creatures...somehow. I am a true lover of animals and the lives of ALL of them are of equal importance to me. All of them deserve a chance to live. Working to keep them alive has taught me much...about animals AND myself.

  • Why does my cat pee in the bathtub drain?

She's a year old and spayed. I've never had a problem with Wispy and inappropriate urination. She's been checked for a UTI and anything else our vet could think of. Her litter box is in the bathroom. Lately, when a human in the household goes to the bathroom to urinate, so does Wispy...except instead of in her box, she goes and squats over the tub drain. Yet she does the "other business" in her box, faithfully. Any idea what the significance of this is?

  • ATTN: 'Tiel breeders, a mutation question?

I haven't bred birds in eons so forgive my ignorance with terms, etc. Am I equiped and am I skilled? Absolutely, but here's the thing.

Christmas and Perry are almost ten years old. They were had raised from my own stock back when I bred Cockatiels. They've been housed together their entire lives and are bonded. To the best of MY knowledge, C and P were both males. Well guess what? WRONG ANSWER. Perry put an egg in the treat bowl. Then there were two, then five. I now have three babies and two fertile eggs that are no doubt going to hatch. Yes, I moved them to a box when I candled the first one and it was fertile.

My question is in reference to mutation. Back when I bred 'Tiels, Lutino's and Pearl Pieds were what you got unless you had mega-bucks to spend on breeder birds. The three babies I now have are all white downed and I'm freaking! How did THAT happen? There is NO logical explanation as to why these birds are white downed. There is no genetic trail that I'm aware of which could lead to this. Could it be back further??? I owned both Christmas and Perry's parents and grandparents....I'm not comprehending how this is possible as none of these birds were above a Lutino.

My second question involves Perry directly. She'll be ten years old in March and I fear for her life knowing that she is a she. Egg binding scares me, especially at this age. if she'll put eggs in the treat bowl now, she'll likely keep doing it. If I seperate she and Christmas they'll die. What can I do to prevent her from laying eggs? She's WAY too old for this. I'm already assisting her with feeding because I feel so badly for her little old butt...HELP!?!

Yeah, I know....I never should have put them together. Had that STUPID vet I had back then not told me they were both male, this wouldn't be an issue.

  • Dog that only barks at police officers?

My fence lacks reaching the street by about twenty feet so the dog can't quite get to the road. Under normal circumstances my dog only barks if someone pulls into my driveway or stops on the road directly in front of the house, such as the mailman or the meter reader. He's six years old and we've lived here for about three months. The following is new behavior.

The dog barks every time a police officer drives down the street. My first thought was that it was the color of their cars (not sure they see color) but that's since been ruled out. He barks at marked cars, with bubble lights or without, and he barks at unmarked detective's cars (we have them in a variety of colors) as well. If there's a cop in that car, he knows it. HOW? Can anyone come up with a logical explanation for this...since I know he can't read plates? Is it possible that because of all of the equipment in their cars, he's responding to some type of radio frequency emanating from these cars that we can't hear? I figure all of these cars must have something in common besides that they contain cops...and I highly doubt that my dog is psychic.

  • ATTN: Those owned by FIV/FeLV positive cats, have you seen THIS?

I just ran across this article and I am FLOORED! I have one who's positive and I am jumping up and down at the prospect that this could be a reality. If you have a positive cat you need to read this.

And because it has to be in the form of a question, once again....have you seen THIS?

    http://www.pawnation.com/2009/07/27/feline-leukemi...

    from the article...

"Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) are phrases that every cat owner dreads -- and for good reason. The diseases are deadly, and treatments for either of them are limited. That may soon change.

Missouri-based company ProLabs has recently launched a drug to fight these devastating infections. It's the first treatment for the diseases to have been granted a conditional license by the USDA."

  • Foster cat with an odd habit, look at this foolish cat?

I have to show you a picture because you just can't appreciate this unless you see it. Warning, Amby looks very sickly in this picture but I promise you she is heaps better than she was when she came here to be fostered. She was 3/4th's dead when she was turned in to the shelter, and almost completely bald. She's still thin but now she has hair!

Here's our girl...better known as "Bee"

    WHAT IS SHE DOING?

    http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd233/AvianWond...

She does this everywhere. On the counter, the feeding table (as you can see) and on my desk. And she just hangs there. This incident that I photographed, I must have thirty photo's because she just hung there for at least ten minutes. This is what she does all the time now. She literally 'hangs' around. She cleans herself in this position as well.

And she practiced. I couldn't figure out why one minute she was on a table or counter, and then I'd turn my head and WHAM, she was in the floor on her butt. I thought she was clumsy or had serious balance issues or something, until I saw THIS. But no, apparently this cat was practicing this act and she'd fall until she got herself coordinated enough to hang there WITHOUT falling.

Again, WTF do you suppose she calls herself doing?!?!

You ever seen one do THIS?!?!

I must congratulate her though..if this was her attempt at "see, look how unique I am, you gotta keep me now,' she really hit the jackpot!

  • My pup has the squirts, should we ER or wait til morning?

I don't know what's going on. It started about 10pm. It's happened three times and it's 'food' brown, the consistency of thick syrup, and grainy looking I guess? No blood or mucus, just sludge? LOL...ewww...I know, I'm sorry. Whole roll of paper towels BOOM gone. This is a pup but she's a wolf dog, she's huge already. All 33 pounds worth. Her's gonna be a big girl...and she left me a big mess.

She was wormed two weeks ago. She's current on vaccines and otherwise appears normal. She's four months old. She was bouncing around in here, sitting on my other dog's head as usual, until she passed out half an hour ago.

I gave her pedialyte and toddler crackers (no sodium) for dehydration and to try and settle her belly. "It" hasn't happened in about two hours now but I'm scared to death whatever is causing it could get very bad very fast and she could get worse.

She hasn't eaten anything but her food so it's nothing she ate. She is strictly monitored because she WILL eat anything she can get in her mouth. She only goes outside supervised, always, honest to God.

It's going to cost me $500 in the door at the ER vet. I don't want to pay it obviously, but I will if I have to. Is it okay to wait if it doesn't get any worse by morning or should we just go to the ER vet now...just in case? If anything happens to this dog I will die. I spent FOUR YEARS waiting for friends to decide to breed their pair to get this pup and she is my pride and joy.

And naturally, the one time I need her, my regular vet is OUT OF TOWN....grrrrrrrr. We've got about five hours before our vet will be in....what do you think I should do?

  • I have a question about pups and rabies shots, please?

I took my thirteen week old pup to our local 'pet-vac' day yesterday for reduced fee immunizations. She received her first round of puppy shots and got wormed, but the on staff vet told me to wait a month and bring her back for her second round of puppy shots and her rabies. Is that normal, to wait until they're four months old for rabies?

  • Dog with knots, are they normal knots or a problem?

1st...I'm no dog expert, honestly. I know the basics. I rely on the vet for everything else where my dogs are concerned.

My dog is three years old. He's a 20 pound yorkie mix. He's not neutered. Why? Because he's an indoor dog, my female is fixed, and I'm an idiot.. you want me to lie? I'm rethinking that right now, trust me.

How can I put this tactfully....midway between Benji's pee pee and his gonads, there is a knot on either side of the base of his pee pee that are like two grape sized rocks, is that normal?

I've already made an appointment with the vet but I can't get him in until in the morning unless it's an emergency. He seems fine. I wanted to at least ask her if this is normal but she wasn't in and her secretary knows less about dogs than I do. We're supposed to be there at 10am tomorrow.

Are these things supposed to be there? I don't ever remember seeing them and this dog spends a lot of time upside down in my lap...I don't see how I could have missed this.

What are these things, do you have any idea?????????

I'm watching him like a hawk now. I've checked and he's peeing fine and his pee looks okay, but if he does ANYTHING the slightest bit odd between now and in the morning, I'm taking him in on emergency.

    I'm really worried about him.

  • ATTN: Cat lovers, can we pull together to make this happen?

The attached news article appears on CNN's website and links to a Florida news station as well. I've posted a link to the news article. I've every confidence it's been vetted by CNN for use on their site.

It's re a NO KILL SHELTER in Florida, '10th Life', and they desperately need additional housing because their numbers now already top 600.

There are pictures and video's posted on "10th Life"s' website of their facility and it clearly shows the degree of care that these poor animals are receiving. It seems to be a phenomenal place and they welcome visitors any time!!!

They aren't asking anyone to donate large amounts of cash...just $10...if you can....and if you would, please tell someone else about them and ask that they donate $10. They need $21,000 asap, to construct additional housing for 140 cats, because of the recession. They have run out of room!!!!

And while you're on their website, read 'Chippers Story.' If this is any incling as to the character of the type of people running this shelter, they are top knotch and they really deserve our help.

Please, will you join with me, and let's try to see just how much of a difference we here at Yahoo can make for these cats? This is OUR chance to make a big difference, together!

  • Neutering and pregnancy...nomination for most ignorant YA's question ever asked......?

No possible way that Tater could have knocked Smeagol and Panda up AFTER he was neutered, right? Zero possibility, correct? Is there ANY chance that neutering can be botched? Seriously. Please don't think this is a joke. We have a serious probem here.

My male was neutered 58 days ago, and yes, his noogies appear to be absent. But my two females are just barely starting to show. There is no way that these cats are 58 days pregnant or more..no way.

I have no other males and they do not and have not gone outside, ever. The only way another cat could have impregnated them is if he managed to do it through a plate glass window. I have a stray male who sits on my window sill and looks in at my cats all the time.

No, there is no one here who could have inadvertantly let the cats out and then got them back in without my knowing it. There is no one here but me.

I just recently bought the house. I have even checked everywhere I can think of for any possible way that the cats could be getting out and then sneaking back in without my knowledge. Nothing.

I keep going back to a botched neuter because of the mysteriously pregnant females AND the fact that I have had nothing but problems with this cat since I got him neutered. He's still chasing my females around doing his thing...and I've never seen a male do this after being neutered. He's also had nothing but health problems since, and his attitude has completely changed. He ACTS like an unaltered male now and he never acted that way before. He pees in inappropriate places. His hair is falling out. He's displaying horrible food aggression and the cat I had who used to refuse to allow me to put him down, now has no use for me unless I have food. He chases my females endlessly and he treats them really, really badly.

He's been to three vets. They keep treating the symptoms....Clindamycin, Itraconozole...etc. They treat, it does no good, and then when it doesn't they say it's something else. This week, the hair loss is a flea allergy they say. The cat was never sick a day in his life and he NEVER had a hair out of place....and we don't HAVE fleas. Do these vets think I lie about that, knowing that lying could cause further injury to Tater???? Last month, they said it was ringworm.

I don't know what else to do...Tater is suffering, something is WRONG...and when I say whatever it is MUST have something to do with the neuter, they laugh at me. They think I'm lying about the two pregnant females, or that I'm on drugs...or mental.

Can a neuter be botched or not?

  • Any idea why pup stockpiles various household items.....?

Mina is 8.5 weeks old. Since I brought her home and she dragged her bed to one specific place in the living room, that has become her "area."

Yes, she chews, but for the most part she chews only the appropriate things, toys, bones, rawhide, etc.

First, she started stealing my bedrooms shoes. She takes them to her area, dumps them, and then goes about her business. She does this with the spatula. The litter scooper. My curling iron. Socks. Rolls of twine. Forks. The cat food bowl ( and how she manages it full, and doesn't spill a drop I've no clue. But she doesn't eat it). My car keys. My clip board. My nail file...and the list goes on. If you leave everything there, she will go every once and a while, inspect everything, and appears to rearrange it as though she's cataloging it. And if you take an item away she finds something else to replace it.

I watched her shred the last few paper towels on a roll yesterday, I assumed the massive chew fest was about to start. She wanted the cardboard roll! After she got the paper towels off of it she took the roll to her area. She does this with toilet paper rolls as well.

And she doesn't chew anything in her area. She makes the mess somewhere else. Her area stays clean.

Surely you're not going to tell me this is normal?!?

Yes, I do take these things away for obvious reasons, and we've become much more diligent about leaving things lying around that the cat can knock off of a table for her! But I'm guilty, I have stepped back and observed because it's just fascinating to watch. I am beyond curious to figure out why she does this.

She's rumored to be part wolfdog. Was raised outside, unfortunately, with very little human contact. But she's adjusted to indoor surroundings and other pets beautifully. Well behaved, sweet, lovable...all around just a really good girl. She was so busy here she never once howled for her Mama.

Oh, and her toys aren't "kept" in her area. She piles those in the bathroom or the kitchen and goes there to play with them?!?

  • I could use some reassurance...cat w/FIV.....?

He's eight months old. He was diagnosed about six weeks ago. He's a hand fed, and I've had him since he was pulled from the engine block of an abandoned vehicle when he was just days old. He was always a little "odd" and chronically ill. Thought never crossed my mind to have him tested for FIV. He had shots, and there was always a reasonable explanation for his illnesses...Coccidia almost killed him first, then a UTI. Whatever he got, it was ten times worse than normal. Eight weeks ago it seems that his system started attacking the plaque at him gum line. His mouth was nothing but one massive ulcer. I just didn't know and it kills me to think his mouth was like that and I, of all people, missed it at first. I can't believe I was so STUPID. When his vet pried his mouth open and I saw in there I cried for days. It was one of the hardest things I've ever had to watch, putting him on gerber baby food, and bargaining with him to PLEASE eat for Mommy. Through the grace of God and proper meds he recovered, but during the interum, he was tested for FIV and put on Clindamycin. A depo shot to combat inflammation then turned him into the nightmare cat from hell for two weeks. No more steroids. EVER.

He's done fine. He did one round (14 days) of Clindamycin (April 17th-May 3rd), so for three weeks he's been fine with no meds. Yesterday his stools started lossening up, he started hacking again, he wants to be babied as if he feels bad, he threw up and today he took to sleeping in the corner of the kitchen...just like before. I had already purchased an additional bottle of Clindamycin for him because his vet told me this would happen, this is the life he's destined to have, and now that it's happening again....I just don't know if I'm doing the right thing. I love this cat with my whole heart. I would do anything, give anything, to make it go away, but this time I can't. Do you think I'm being selfish to keep him here, knowing that from time to time he IS going to get sick, and that he'll be forced to suffer until he's put back on meds? I don't want to cause him a moments pain but apparently what I've done thus far hasn't prevented him from getting sick again. This poor cat has been on Clindamycin so many times now that the poor lil guy actually licked the meds out of the dropper when I started him on it earlier tonight. Damn near broke my heart. He used to run. It's almost as if he knows that's "the good stuff."

I have no prior experience with FIV positive cats. Do any of you? What would you do if this was YOUR baby boy? Do you think I'm being selfish keeping him here? Anyone out there have an FIV positive who's managed to live a relatively normal life? I want to keep him here if it's what's best for HIM...not because I'm going to suffer if he's gone. I'm having difficulty separating the two, know what I mean?

  • Kitten is trying to kill me?

He's seven months. Didn't get the best start in life. Employee dug him out of an engine block. He was about a week old, half frozen and nearly starved to death. He was always tiny and sickly. The majority of his life he's been on meds. Still he was just generally not well. He was recently diagnosed with FIV. Now we know WHY he's done so poorly and with proper meds he's great. A little TOO great maybe.

He's trying to kill me, I swear. My sweet, affectionate baby boy has turned into a tirant and a bully. He's gained weight like you wouldn't believe( 2 pounds in a month!) so now instead of puny, he's stocky and STRONG! He's whacking the sh*t out of everything and everyone. He sleeps on my pillow...well he did. Last night he used my forehead as a spring board and left a four inch gash across my face.

He's not on anything except Clindamycin...and he did get a depo shot almost a month ago, but he's just recently turning vicious and I don't know why.

Vet says he's been sick for so long and now that he's healthy and strong, he's using it for all he's worth. I'm just not so sure. Carmel was never, ever like this. He wanted to be held like a baby and carried. I'm really worried about that depo shot. It's a steroid, and I was vehemently opposed to the use of steroids, but with this illness I have little recourse if that's what he has to have. It was more a trial run, to help with his infection the vet said. His mouth was infected some kinda bad. He's doing well on the Clindamycin and so long as that continues there won't be anymore steroids. But could that one shot have turned my Carmel into this madman? He's drawing blood. He's grabbing me by the leg and really sinking in, and when I bend over he's trying to grab my face with both sets of claws extended. I'm a little worried and the vet isn't taking me seriously. She hasn't seen what he's done to me and he's not little anymore and easy to handle. When he gets a running start and hurles himself at you, it d*mn near knocks you down. I read that this depo, a derivative of prednisolone, can cause "behavior modification" and that's really freaking me out. This odd behavior has gotten increasingly worse since she gave him that shot, not before. He is 100% uncontrollable now. If it IS possible that shot did this, is it ever going to wear off? He doesn't understand that if he kills me he doesn't get meds or food!

  • Neutering and hair loss?

First...we're going to the vet in EXACTLY three hours. Yes, I'm counting. I'm that angry/upset/scared. Tater is eight/nine months old. I had him neutered April 17th. Three days ago he started tinkling in the sink and he's never tinkled anywhere except in his box. Last night when I brushed him I noticed his hair is thinning to the point he's almost bald at the base of his tail and on his back legs?!!? An hour ago I just happened to catch one of of my other cats right and HER hair looks way to thin...and now, upon closer inspection I find that a THIRD one has thin/balding spots? WTH is going on?

My cats don't go outside. They've had all their shots, they're wormed, fixed, no fleas etc. They all eat REAL food. I don't get it. None of them have ever been sick...except for Carmel, the baby, who is six months old. The rest of them...NINE in total, look just fine, no hair issues at all. We've got no "squirts" no throwing up....nothing?!?

They don't have sores, hot spots or rashes...just no hair! I'm scared to death Tater has contracted mange or something from the vets office and brought it home!!! I'm a frantic mess. I just can't believe this is happening to my babies! My God, I work my *ss off to do everything right!! Now this?

Any ideas...before my head explodes? I'm scared to death their vet is going to tell me this is some catastrophic illness. In three hours time I'll be a babbling idiot. Well, as you can clearly see I'm halfway there already.

Do you have ANY idea what this could be? I just checked all of them. It's just Tater, Panda and Fuzzy...and it's starting on the back end of all three of them.

Should I take them all to the vet, all nine, since we're going anyway? I only have to pay one office visit and then $10 for each additional cat.

What could be doing this to my cats?????????

No, I have NO patience whatsoever. I realize that. :)

  • Owners of multiple cats: a behavioral question?

Obviously, I have no hands on experience observing the day to day behavior of anyone else's cats but my own. Here's where you come in.....

For those of you who have multiples, males AND females, what do you find are the most pronounced differences in the personalities of each of the two sexes in cats over a year old?

I find my males to be more openly affectionate, more playful and cooperative. I find my females to be more stubborn, spiteful and quick tempered.

    How about yours?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!
