  • Does an extension to file a 1040 return keep the statute open for receiving a refund?

I have a client who has not filed a number of back returns. I just filed the return for 2010. The taxpayer filed a timely extension for this year. I calculated the 2010 return and came up with a refund due. Does the extension he filed keep the statute open on the refund?

  • Why did 214 Republican Representatives refuse to attend a meeting with president Obama?

Since they are saying that the only thing keeping them from resolving this issue was that Obama refused to talk, why did they refuse to come?

  • Did you guys know that congress is not exempted from The Affordable Care Act?

I have been hearing all this bull about congress being exempt etc. I went to a seminar tonight given by the League of Women Voters and this is just not true. Current members of congress are grandfathered in to the old health plan. Any new members, when they are elected will use the health exchanges from their state and will have to buy insurance like anyone else. We are being lied to so that we don't think we like this law.

  • Why won't the networks cover the fracking disaster going on with the floods in Colorado?

I received some pictures and footage from a group trying to fight hydraulic fracturing in Colorado. Many fracking wells are flooded, tanks are tipping over and barrels of poisonous chemicals are in the flood waters. Those flood waters are filled with poison from the oil wells and the networks, newspapers etc. are not saying anything about it. People are not being warned that the flood waters are dangerous. I think this is total disregard for human safety and proof that the networks like the government are being controlled and run by the oil and gas industry as well as other major corporations. There is only the internet to pass on this kind of information. I'm sure this must be another example of the "liberal controlled media". It is a media controlled by the international corporations and the media.

  • Has anyone ever seen a hockey game where both teams pulled their goalies before?

I have been watching hockey since the 60s and I truly believe this is the first time I have ever seen this. Hawks pulled Crawford and got a goal. Then the Hawks got another goal to go into the lead and Boston pulled their goalie to try to tie it up. I think this is very unusual if not the first. Anyone know another time this happened?

  • Does anyone know the tax implications of being Amish and opting out of social security?

I am looking at returns for an Amish gentleman. The Amish can opt out of paying social security by signing a form saying that they do not believe in insurance programs and that they belong to a community that will take care of their own in retirement and they waive any social security or medicare benefits. They do pay taxes just like anyone else, they just do not pay self employment tax.

This man has earned income from self employment and he has children. He qualifies for the Earned Income credit and the child tax credit but he has not been claiming any credits. He worries that if he claims credits that will disqualify him for the exemption on self employment. I have researched this everywhere and I cannot see that this is true. Social security and income tax are 2 separate things and when I read the statement he signed for the exemption, form 4029 all it says is that he cannot claim benefits. There is nothing in this statement or in my research that says he does not file taxes just like anyone else. If anyone has experience with this situation please let me know. Any help would be appreciated. I have prepared amended returns for prior years and his current return including the credits and it results in large refunds. I do not want to risk being wrong here though so thanks in advance for any help.

  • Menonite exempt from self employment tax?

I have a tax return for a Mennonite gentlemen with 3 children. He has filed form 4029 and as exempt from self employment tax. He waives any benefits from social security and medicare and does not pay in. This is legal and correct. My question is does this in any way effect how he files his return for income tax purposes. ie does it keep him from taking the credits for earned income tax and child tax credits. I cannot find anything that implies this, social security and income tax are entirely separate so it seems to me that he can claim these credits and get a refund. Help is appreciated, this is a new one on me. Thanks in advance.

  • What to do with health insurance deducted on 1099R?

I have a 1099R that shows health insurance deducted between box 8 and box 9a. It is from the Michigan Public Schools. There is no number on the box it is just titled health insurance deducted. There is no place to enter this on the program and I don't quite know what to do with it. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I have not seen this before. It could just be entered for Schedule A which the t.p. does not file but I want to be sure. Thanks in advance.

  • Do you really need special laundry detergent for a high efficiency machine?

We just bought a new washing machine without being told or noticing that it is a "high efficiency" machine. Instructions say you must you high efficiency or high intensity detergent. This stuff is very expensive and I'm wondering if it is really necessary.

  • How do I build a fence on a slope?

I am trying to fence a section of my back yard to keep the dog in. I want to use simple metal fence posts and light wire fencing. This is the only section of the yard not fenced. The slope is not steep but it is significant. It would run from an existing fence post to the corner of the garage but I am not sure of the best approach. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

  • Anyone know what to do with a 1099-A?

I have not seen one of these and I'm not sure where it goes on a 1040. I have seen 1099-Cs and I know what to do with these but not this. From the numbers given on the 1099-A it seems like it should be reported as a sale of personal residence. I can't see what else could be done with the amounts reported - Balance of Principal Outstanding and Fair Market Value. The principal is higher than the fair market value. I could use any help on this, thanks.

  • What is included in per diem for an over the road truck driver?

Does the per diem include lodging or is this an additional deduction? I know the per diem is $59 per day but I do not know if you add lodging on the nights that he gets a hotel instead of using his sleeper. Does it also include costs for showers etc. I would appreciate any help you can give.
