Born and raised Mormon (LDS), returned missionary, now an atheist. The LDS church is based on the life of a con-man. There are multiple versions of the first vision and they contradict each other in important ways. He used magic rocks to translate the Book of Mormon, a book claims that race is a result of a curse from God. It's all screwed up. The answer to life's problems is found in science. It has done more to improve lives than any religion ever has.

  • Mormons, am I interpreting your scriptures correctly?

D&C 77:6 - The seven seals represent each thousand years of the earths temporal existence. This is saying that there will only be 7,000 years of the earth's existence after the Fall of Adam, when the earth was in its paradasiacal state. This verse contradicts the idea of an old earth.

2 Nephi 2:22 - If it wasn't for the Fall, then all things would have stayed in the same state they were in when they were created. This verse contradicts the idea of biological evolution, which depends on reproduction and predation.

Gen 1:4,5 - The separation of light from dark is a day. The evening and the morning were the first day. This verse clearly states the timing of the earths creation. Six literal days with the same definition of time that we have today.

Each of these verses contradict known facts about the earth. Am I wrong to interpret these verses in this way?

  • Mormons, do you know the capitol of the Comoros Islands?

Have you ever heard of these islands? Do you think this is coincidence? Do you know how these islands relate to Captain William Kidd and his buried treasure? Did you know that the money diggers of Joseph Smiths time were mostly searching for the treasure of Captain Kidd?

  • Relativity and quantum mechanics?

Supposedly electrons are moving at the speed of light, which according to Einstein, means time is not passing. So, why do we experience time? I think either electrons move less than the speed of light or Einstein was wrong.

  • Are conservatives insane or do they really believe Obama is trying to destroy America?

Isn't he trying to help people by bringing them better health coverage? And weren't the bailouts unavoidable because without them unemployment would be in the 20-30% range? And wasn't the stimulus worth it for my job at least? I'm a Teachers Aide. Also, police and fire dept were able to continue with their duties. Obama saved a lot of jobs.

  • Mormons: fallible prophets?

Every Mormon believes that their prophets are fallible and not perfect. So, how deep do their mistakes go? Are they wrong about evolution and Adam and Eve? Are they wrong about why the Lamanites had dark skin? What else are they wrong about? How wrong can they be and still be considered prophets who are supposed to be able to see things in the past and future? At what point do we say, These guys didn't know what they were talking about?

  • Born gay? Has anyone read Daniel Goleman's "Social Intelligence"?

He says that our brains chemistry changes with each social interaction. This is my argument against the idea that people are born gay, but that they become gay as a result of society's influence. I know that there are some cases where genetics play a role. Look at hermaphrodites. Some times the body gets things mixed up. But, I think most gays are made, not born. MOST, not all.

  • Would anyone have a problem with this? Religion in science class?

I think religion should be taught in schools as a part of science class. Religion is really a science. It's the history of science. Religion and science are both pursuing the same questions: Why are we here and how do we live a good life? We should be teaching kids not just the Bible, but the other books like the Quran, the Talmud, Greek and Roman mythology, and all that other crap. Teach all the creation stories and then teach science's creation story. I think it would be an interesting class.

  • I can reconcile Religion and Science?

I think I've figured out how to reconcile the two. I'm sure there will be people that disagree with me, or maybe even prove me wrong. If you can, then go right ahead. I've asked a couple questions about things I've been thinking about recently. You can see them in my profile. Here's my question:

I've heard that a bolt of lightning is hotter than the surface of the sun. Also, stars differ in color depending on their mass and heat. A hotter star will be a purple-ish color similar to what you see in a bolt of lightning. So, is electricity actually just light? Does electricity equal light? Are they the same thing? Electricity could be light on a different scale than the sun, meaning hotter (or more hot, I don't know or care).

I think this can reconcile with religion because the Bible is full of references to light. In the beginning, God seperated the light from the darkness. Jesus is the light of the world. Could this be a literal phrase? We know that electricity operates at all levels of the universe, even within our own brains. Through electrical charges all atoms are chemically bonded together to create molecules. So, light permeates the entire universe and binds all things together. How many times did Jesus refer to himself as "the light?"

Also, the Big Bang hypothesis says that first there was an "infinitely dense particle" and then a massive explosion. The Bible says first there was nothing, then there was light. Isn't an "infinitely dense particle" the same as nothing? Isn't a massive explosion just the birth of light? Any thoughts on this? Feel free to call me whatever names you want. I can take it. Thanks.

  • Did I just reconcile science with religion?

In the beginning, there was nothing, then there was light. Does this sound like the Big Bang? It's actually Genesis 1.

As we look out in space, we are actually looking back in time. Light travels at different speeds so we are actually seeing light that existed millions of years ago.

Einstein proved that, as we approach the speed of light, time stands still. Does this mean we can time travel if we reach the speed of light?

We have light at the center of our solar system, the sun. As we travel at the speed of light, the sun will become solid through time.

Einstein was working on unifying the theories of electro-magnetism and gravity into one unified theory. Does light play a part in unifying these ideas? Light is the result of hydrogen and helium fusion at least in the case of the sun. But, electricity also produces light, ie lightning. Are there any interesting ideas out there that would help me understand this stuff?

  • Is God really just electricity?

Has anyone ever considered this? Electricity is the invisible force that binds all things together. The elements are magnetically attracted to other elements to create chemical bonds and molecules. Electricity is also at work in our own bodies. Electric impulses allow neurotransmitters to send signals which allow our brain to have memories and emotions. We can see that electric radio waves can travel through space with our tv's and radios. Could God be at work in this force? Is this force God? And will learning more about electricity bring us closer to God? Maybe electricity is the Holy Spirit? I'm gonna take another couple of hits of acid and then I'll see if I can figure this out.
