Replace bulb on rear projector HDTV or buy new TV?
I'm trying to decide if I should replace the bulb in my 2006 rear projection HDTV, or just get a new LCD or plasma. The bulb will probably cost me 150-200. It's a Sony KF-50WE620 set, a 50" 720p/1080i tv. The performance was decent, my main gripe was it's lack of ports, it had no HDMI ports, just one DVI and a bunch of component.
The bulb would be much cheaper than a new TV even with their falling prices of course, but then with something this old I don't know if something else will fail early, or how long the replacement bulb will last. If anything beyond the bulb goes it's almost certainly not worth replacing.
Thoughts? And if I do get a new set, what are the best affordable ones in about the same size? I take it LCDs and Plasmas have somewhat converged in performance?
4 AnswersTVs9 years ago360 update failed, won't let me do anything else.?
So I updated my xbox 360 today, but when it restart it said it could not read the update from my USB drive. I couldn't get rid of the message, so I unplugged it and restart it. But even with no storage devices attached, it gives me that message and I can't get past it to the normal stuff. It won't even play an inserted game. Halp?
Bonus points: I connect my 360 to the internet by connecting it to a laptop with ethernet connected to wifi and bridging the connection. In the Xbox live connection test, it always passes the PC test and Internet connection, but can never connect to xbox live (updates like I just got are hit and miss, seemingly). Halp again?
Thanks in advance
1 AnswerXbox10 years agoSwitching majors/directionless?
I'm in Computer Science, and after having just finished half of my major I've determined its really not what I want to do. The biggest problem is though, if I did switch, I wouldn't know what to switch to. Right now its a case of "if you don't change your path, you get to where you're going", but I don't know which path to take if not the one I'm halfway down. There are a few subjects that are mildly interesting, but nothing that really captivates me. If only there was a major in "random interest of the day". Also, I'm halfway to the finish line, it would be a shame, all that wasted time, so much effort, and money, mostly for nothing.
Anyone else been through this? Any advice? What did you do when you didn't know what you wanted?

On Facebook when you comment on a friends post, it can become visible to people on your friends list depending on the person who's post you commented on's settings. Is there any way of stopping that from happening if you are the commenter? Seems like a pretty glaring issue, you never know what will show up and what won't.

Which is the best?

My Rival just broke (as does pretty much everyones, its a POS) and Koodo just gave 50 dollars towards my tab, and I had 50 towards a new phone from bills so I can get a phone under 100 for free, or pay the difference for a better one.
1 AnswerCell Phones & Plans1 decade agoUbuntu 10.10 wireless, video acceleration, and sound on gateway 7330GZ?
This is a three part question, kudos if you can answer all three.
I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a Gatway 7330GZ a while ago, and after enabling a proprietary wireless driver that seemed to be working fine. But since yesterday, it won't even see any wireless networks, let alone connect to them. I don't recall having changed anything, any idea why that happened? The wireless card is still on.
Second, there is no video acceleration. I know Intel IGP's are notoriously shitty on Linux (as they are on anything, but at least they have driver support on Windows), and also its an old chip, but is there any way to get video acceleration working on this? Ubuntu hasn't been able to find a driver, and because of it no visual effects can be enabled, and video playback is choppy at or above 720p whereas it worked on Windows.
Third, like the above it seems to be missing a sound driver. Ideas?
Thank you so much in advance if you answer all of them.
4 AnswersSoftware1 decade ago7'th gen iPod Classic for 185 dollars worth it?
I'm talking to a guy who is offering a latest generation iPod Classic (160gb, 7'th generation) for 185 dollars. Its only 3 weeks old, he got it in late 2009 but they sent him a new one (this one) with the warranty. Does that sound like a good deal? A new one is 280 dollars plus 13 percent sales tax here in Canada.
For that price the best I could get is a 16GB Nano from Apple, but thats too small, and the larger Touch's are too expensive for me. I'd go with another company besides Apple but I already have a bunch of accessories (dock, transmitter, etc) for iPods so no sense wasting them.
2 AnswersMusic & Music Players1 decade agoBroken iPod Nano fifth generation - What should I do?
Long story short, some crazy chick dented the back of my Nano with a rock. Now it just displays a white screen. I tried taking it apart today to fix it but the dent prevents the guts from sliding out, and its in a place where I can't use a tool to undent it from the inside.
Looking at Apples prices for iPod repair (obviously crazy chicks aren't covered under warranty) I think paying that much is nuts, its over half the price of a new Nano! So I'm wondering if there is a cheaper way to get it repaired in Canada, or if I should just bite the bullet and start saving pennies for a new one? How much can a broken one be sold for?
Really sucks, it was only months old.
2 AnswersMusic & Music Players1 decade agoWhy does lime or lemon make green tea lighter?
Whenever I put lime or lemon in my green tea, it seems to turn a ligher, paler shade of green. It also stays green for longer than without the lemon, as you know green tea turns brown as it oxidizes. Given that studies show that lemon or lime increase how many antioxidants are absorbed by your system, I came up with my own theory. Given that green tea browns with time/oxidation and lemon or lime prevent this, and they've been shown to increase availability of antioxidants to your body, it seems that the reason they make it lighter is that they reduce oxidation in the green tea, presumably with their vitamin C content. Does that make sense? Or is there another reason?
2 AnswersOther - Food & Drink1 decade agoLaptops screen turned red?
My sister's 3 year old laptop (Toshiba Satellite A200-AH5) just started showing red lines and dots all over the screen, particularly on black areas of the displayed image. Initially I thought it was the graphics chip, as I've seen that pattern before when the shaders overheat or get corrupted, but when I plugged it in to my external monitor everything was perfect. The laptop is malware free and performance has not taken a hit.
So that made me think it was one of two things, either something in the monitor went wonky (backlight, inverter, etc), or the connection between the graphics chip and the monitor is loose. In either case, how would I fix it? Is there a guide online? I did not find one in my googleing adventures.
One last thing, searching Toshiba red screen showed me quite a few results that also mention the 3 year mark, buyers beware. It must be something that goes wrong around that timeframe, weather deliberate or not.
Thanks, happy answering.

5 AnswersClassical1 decade agoADHD- predominantly inattentive?
I've suspected I have ADHD (specifically, predominantly innatentive) for years now, but i've been able to get by without medication up until this point.
What changed? I started University. I just finished my first year of Computer Science, and man oh man, was it rough. I did fairly well in high school, and I think thats because (and lets be honest) most people can get by in high school without studying all that much. Since I suspect I have ADHD, studying was always troublesome for me, but in HS I could retain enough information with very little studying (no joke, all three years of HS I studied less than 15 hours, and even got on the honours roll.). Thats also the reason many of my friends were surprised when I brought this up, many of them felt I was "too intelligent" (theres the self-flattery, lol) to have ADHD, but of course they are not professionals and do not know that people with ADHD are no less likely to be highly intelligent than other people, and in fact may be more likely to have a high IQ. Unfortunately, its like having a V12 engine but only being able to use first gear.
Uni though, uni is just a different beast altogether. I barely got by. Thats when I decided to take my list of symptoms to a doctor, and talk to him about it. I did so last week, and he sent me to get a blood test done first to rule out some other causes of these symptoms. He is also a close family friend (always trouble ) and expressed his sentiment that he didn't think I have ADHD, and even if I did he thinks I shouldn't be medicated. This reflects the sentiment of my parents, who seem to think that everything can be solved without medication (they are from India, plus they are...well...old).
I see him again tomorrow, and if I chose to he will proscribe me the medication. I think i'll ask him to do that, because the worst case scenario is that they don't work and I stop taking them, right? Besides, with ADHD very often the medication is the diagnosis.
So yeah, just in case this post wasn't long enough I'll post my symptoms list here, and I want your honest opinions. Does it sound like ADHD-PI, which medications should I talk to him about, etc. Also another thing, like I mentioned my parents are very traditional and somewhat against medications. I'm 19 now and live in canada, so I don't actually NEED their consent to take the medications, but I want them to be a part of my getting better. What can I say to them?
-Careless mistakes at work/school work
-cannot focus on boring tasks

-starting/finishing assignments is very hard
-generally restless/always walking around the house, even when eating meals
-fidgety
-easily frustrated by tasks/easily give up

2 AnswersMental Health1 decade agoRecover a bunch of files off an external hard drive?
I pulled a stupid today. I have a 160GB external hard drive that I wanted to use for xbox 360 storage. It also had other important files on it. I missed the warning the xbox gave, and found my hard drive to be completely reformatted as FAT32 (formerly NTFS), with all my files gone.
Main question: Can I recover all the files on the drive if its been reformatted? How would I do this, step by step? Any freeware apps that will do it?
5 AnswersOther - Hardware1 decade agoXbox 360 plus external hard drive partitioning?
The new xbox 360 firmware update allows using external hard drives or USB drives for game saves, but only up to 16GB. I have a 160GB external drive, is it possible to use 16 for the 360 and the rest with my computer? How would I do this?
And I'm not talking about formatting as FAT32 just being able to access media from it, the new firmware allows you to put game saves on the external drive as well.

3 AnswersDiet & Fitness1 decade agoJesus story = copy-pasta of Krishna story?
Many scholars raise the possibility that the Gospels' description of Jesus' life was derived, at least in part, from Krishna's life story, and from the myths of other god-men.
Stephen Van Eck writes: "Then there is the Hindu epic, the Bhagavad-Gita, a story of the second person of the Hindu Trinity, who took human form as Krishna. Some have considered him a model for the Christ, and it's hard to argue against that when he says things like:
'I am the beginning, the middle, and the end' (BG 10:20 vs. Rev. 1:8 ).
His advent was heralded by a pious old man named Asita, who could die happy knowing of his arrival, a story paralleling that of Simeon in Luke 2:25 .
Krishna's mission was to give directions to 'the kingdom of God' (BG 2:72), and he warned of 'stumbling blocks' along the way (BG 3:34; 1 Cor. 1:23 ; Rev. 2:14).
The essential thrust of Krishna's sayings, uttered to a beloved disciple, sometimes seems to coincide with Jesus or the Bible. Compare: 'those who are wise lament neither for the living nor the dead' (BG 2:11) with the sense of Jesus' advice to 'let the dead bury their own dead' (Matt. 8:22 ).
Krishna's saying, 'I envy no man, nor am I partial to anyone; I am equal to all' (BG 9:29) is a lot like the idea that God is no respecter of persons (Rom. 2:11 ; see also Matt. 6:45 ).
And 'one who is equal to friends and enemies... is very dear to me' (BG 12:18) is reminiscent of 'love your enemies' (Matt. 6:44 ).
Krishna also said that 'by human calculation, a thousand ages taken together is the duration of Brahma's one day' (BG 8:17), which is very similar to 2 Peter 3:8." 10
Thoughts?
