When a big movie (only some) is about to be released, it opens only in selected cities first, and then it opens everywhere else. What's the deal with it being only released in selected cities first? Whats the purpose for that.

I have a good friend that has recently become homeless. He now sells collectibles toys at the flea market for some spare change. He sleeps in his old beat up pickup at night.
