  • Do computers have a "black box"?

My young son got the bright idea (read as delinquent and stupid idea) that since his laptop was no longer working and it had a service contract for full replacement if it broke, that he could drop it and it would crack pretty badly to the point that they would have to replace it. Well, it did.

My question is, do current computers have a sort of "black box" technology that would allow the manufacturer to tell the computer was on the fritz before breaking beyond repair.

Yes, I realize this is fraudulent and he should be hung... but it is what it is. Anyone know if there is testing to tell which came first... the break or the software going bad?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Social skills training for disruptive teens?

Any strong recommendations on which books/manuals available for teaching teens with severe disruptive behavior disorders social skills? The best idea would be a manual used in schools-- one you believe is excellent. The material would be used in an in-school-suspension classroom.

Thanks in advance for your answers.

  • Infiniti owners manual says no synthetic oil-- why?

The Infiniti owner's manual and car service departments insist that no synthetic oils are to be used in their engines. Does anyone ACTUALLY KNOW (not theoretically) exactly why?

  • Question about the brakes on a G35?

Has anyone resolved the brakes issue (G35's go thru brakes and rotors too quickly) so that they last 2-4 times longer than what currently is happening? What was your solution and what was the cost of it?

  • Changing a Z rated to an H rated tire-- any potential problems??

Anything to be concerned about if I change the 215/55/70's with a Z rating (on a G35) to H rated tires of the same size? I drive the G35 normally-- never speed, never exceeds speeds of 70-75mph, corner carefully and slowly, stop in a safe manner, etc. Essentially, I treat the car as if it was an old Volvo, but it comes with Z rated tires which are designed for real speed and power.

  • Infiniti question about brakes?

    1) Brakes pads- cost to replace for front?

    2) Brake replacing rotors- how much per rotor part plus labor?

    3) Why have brakes been a major problem with this car? When they've been fixed, what have you had to get done and what was the cost?

Thanx so much for info--- very greatly appreciated

  • Should freedom of the press be restricted?

The press routinely posts stories regarding people accused of a crime but not convicted. This frequently destroys lives (e.g., the Duke Lacrosse team case, the Olympics bomb scare in Atlanta that resulted in strong accusations and eventual acquittal of an innocent man whose life was ruined, etc.) of innocent victims. The tabloids frequently destroy reputations based on conjecture, frequently delving into people's private lives even when asked to step away.

Do these press actions call for a review of the concept of responsible journalism or is this acceptable press behavior?

  • How do you cut down on external road and wind noise when driving?

Anyone have any practical ideas for how best to cut out road noise while driving. Softer tires, close widows, change suspension system, and undercoat the car, are common ones. Does anyone have any other REAL knowledge or experience?

NOTE: Please don't answer if you don't really know, most of us prefer useful and practical info.

  • What is the effect of oversized tires on suspension system?

Own a Volvo 240 sedan, 1992 with over-sized tires (215-70-R14), it normally takes 185-70-R14's. What effect will this have on the suspension system (such as the bushings and tie rods) over time-- will it damage them?

  • Thinking about putting a pre-amped subwoofer in my car...?

Car is a Volvo, 240 sedan, 1992. Would like to put a sub-woofer in, one that is already pre-amped and does not require separate unit to power it, but am not sure of what is best. Is the Bazooka 6.5 inch model good? Any other ideas or models available and from where? Room is an issue, so it will need to go under the seat and be housed already. Cost should be <$150.

Also, can I simply hook it to a regular speaker wire from one of the other speakers already installed?

  • Exhaust-muffler question...?

I own a 1992 Volvo 240 sedan with 200,000 miles. What is the best muffler/exhaust system I can use (pipes and all components after the catalytic) that will last a long time (i.e., won't rust quickly)? Also, what is the approximate cost of such a system (minus labor)? Thanks a million.
