  • Heading to Death Valley for three days and two nights. First time there.?

I'll be backpacking and spending the nights in separate locations. Any "must-see's" I need to check out? Any hiking and camping area recommendations? Thanks

  • Automatic "Thumbs Down" Votes in Comments?

Curious if this is happening to anyone else.

As it's IMPOSSIBLE to get in touch with Yahoo I'll leave it here. Maybe someone can offer some advice.

BTW, I love the customer service phone number they provide which WILL disconnect after a five minute wait or you'll be told the office is closed

I've recently noticed that I automatically receive 'thumbs down' votes on any comment I leave. I know this because I went back to stories that were many years old, replied to someone's comment knowing that it would never be read, and instantly received "thumbs down" votes.

Do I care what someone thinks of my comments? Hardly. Do I like the idea that my account has been highjacked by some freaks? No. Do I think that Yahoo has their act together when it comes to allowing something like this to happen. No freaking way.

If anyone has a suggestion it would be appreciated. I'm afraid that what will need to happen is I'll need to inform any business or friends who use my Yahoo email that I'm dropping them.

  • Yahoo Comments and Hacked?

While I KNOW Yahoo doesn't read these questions, and certainly doesn't care, I thought I'd throw this out as it may be of interest to someone else.

About two weeks ago I noticed a strange thing happening to every comment I would leave on a story. Almost instantly it would receive two "thumbs down" votes. Now I couldn't care any less what someone thinks about my comments but it made me take notice.

I changed by display name and the same thing happened. Last night I went back in to stories that were three years old and left replies to other comments...knowing they would never be read.

Again, two thumb down votes within minutes.

So what do you think Yahoo? Not your problem, right? And if you'd like to make it your problem, any advice?

  • A question about Sequoia Trees?

I've spent a fair amount of time hiking and backpacking in areas with Sequoia's and I've always been curious about something. I searched but was unable to find anything definitive.

How long does it take for a fallen, full grown Sequoia tree to decompose?

    Thanks.

Opinions on grammar - National Parks and CA Natl. Forest Placard?

I spend a lot of time in California's National Parks and National Forests and in most of the vault bathrooms I've used at trailheads there is a placard (see photo) with the following text and formatting.

    PLEASE..

    DO NOT put trash

    in toilets,

    it is extremely

    difficult to remove.

    THANK YOU

In my opinion the comma after "toilets" is wrong. It should be a period and there should be two separate sentences. Perhaps a semi-colon would work but not a comma.

    Any thoughts on this?

If I get some answers supporting my opinion I will make it my life's work to get the Park service to make the change. :)

    Thanks.

  • Sleep Mode vs. Keeping On for laptop?

I have a laptop and will need to activate an "out of office" reply for a week. As I'm using Outlook the computer needs to be 'on' for the automatic response to work.

I'd prefer to not keep my computer on for the week and was wondering if I were to put it in "sleep" mode if the automatic replies would still be sent?

    Thanks.

  • Sequoia National Forest - Camping / Hiking / Backpacking Tips?

Hoping for some tips from anyone who has spent some time in the Sequoia National Forest. I do have hiking and backpacking experience.

I'm looking at nine days during the third week of September. Hoping for a quiet, low-site, car camping base, above 5K or 6K, in close proximity to some trails.

I'm going with a less experienced hiker so moderate will be about the limit. Low to no traffic trails always work best. Out and backs are fine.

I'm also looking at 3-day backpacking trip. Probably no more than 20 miles total and easy to moderate would work best. Loop would be awesome but not necessary.

A big thanks to anyone who can turn me on to some winners.

  • Korean Speakers for a quick translation - How do you say...?

I do a lot of hiking in the Los Angeles mountains and often run in to older Koreans who just LOVE to hike.

I was hoping a Korean speaker could tell me how to say:

    "Have a good hike."

I would need it spelled out in English phonetically please.

    Kamsahamnida! :)

  • John Muir Trail advice. North to South or South to North?

Ready to pull the trigger to hike the JMT this August/Sept. I've heard advantages and disadvantages for heading N to S and S to N. Any experiences would be great.

Also, any info on shuttles/buses from Whitney to Yosemite would be appreciated.

    Thanks.
