  • dangerous bucking problem?

I lease a 9 y.o. OTTB mare and she has been known to buck at the canter. Her owner has told me that when she rode her, she would get nervous if she ever got bucked (even if it was a small one) and would get off and end the ride and therefore learned bucking=end of lesson. I'm a semi-confident rider and decided that i had enough knowledge to deal with this seeing as I want to take this mare into some eventing. I know that OTTbs especially can be prone to buck at the canter to balance. The first couple times I'd cantered her a couple of months ago, she threw some smalls bucks but they were nothing and I rode through them. She has bucked me off before, but they were moderate ones that merely threw me on her neck and I could hold onto her neck and let go w/o being hurt. Recently though, I wanted to try a couple strides, and the moment I sat and put my outside leg back (Keeping her head up so she couldn't throw it down and buck me off) my mare threw her head down, and in one buck through me against a fence, then ran back to the gate. I got back on her and had her working hard for another 20 minutes at a trot, enough so that she was sweating and breathing hard. I am furious seeing as I love this horse and I don't her owner to sell her like she wants and it's hard for me to pay a trainer. Please help, thanks!

  • Clipping Feathers and Pulling Manes?

I have a pure bred shire and to be honest, I don't really like the feathering and long mane. She just looks too scruffy! I was thinking of clipping the feathers--not all the way, but so that you can actually see her hooves. And pulling her mane a couple inches. What do you guys think?

  • What are your opinions on leasing?

I'm wondering about leasing a horse I really want. I know a good amount about horses, but I really want to ride and learn more. Just wondering if this is a good idea? It is a partial lease, and I can ride for 4 days a week. What are your opinions about leasing, if you ever have leased? Is it worth the money for what im doing? (~~$150/month) What are some good things and bad things about leasing ( especially a PARTIAL lease) Thanks!!

  • Which is better to ride in?

I am really looking for some nice boots/chaps to wear. I'm interviewing for some part time jobs as a working student, and I want to look nice and professional. I would really like to get some leather half chaps, but they're kind of expensive. After buying the paddock boots, they came out to be around $90, however the field boots cost about the same. I just want something comfortable to ride in, and have little problems with. What are your opinions on field boots or leather chaps with paddock boots?
