  • What makes the 'click' noise when you turn on an LCD TV?

    Trying to fix a busted tv, the power supply board all seems fine. The TV would normally make a 'click' noise when it got turned on, however it no longer makes that noise. If I knew which individual component was responsible for the click it would help me narrow down where the problem is and what to replace. Any ideas?

    Thanks

  • Can I transfer my Minecraft world to a server?

    I've been mucking around on Minecraft for a while now. So the single player world I have created has a ton of work in it. Now my friend wants to play with me, so I was hoping I could create a server (either hosted by me, or online) and have it load my offline world as a playable online world. Is this possible? How would I go about it?

  • Why do monsters spawn inside my house in Minecraft?

    The house has many floors and many rooms, all well lit. Each room has doors cutting it off from the other rooms. When I go outside (during the day) all doors can be closed, but when I come back my house is full of monsters. Sometimes also I will go into one room, then when I return there will be monsters in my house. It's really annoying me, I keep getting my house blowed up by creepers. There are no holes in the walls.

  • What determines the energy levels of electrons in different atoms?

    I'm aware that each atom has (somewhat) unique differences in the energy 'potential' levels between the electron 'shells'. Because when we detect the released energy from an electron moving down a shell, it gives off a photon of specific wavelength, thus we're able to determine what atom it came from.

    So if for instance E1-E2 of Hydrogen is a different value than E2-E1 of Helium... what determines that difference? I'm unaware of what theory/equation covers this. Do we know only through observation, or is there a quantifiable way to caclulate each element's specific energy levels for electrons?

    Thanks

  • Skyrim: low level creatures?

    In order to level my enchanting up I want to fill up a bunch of empty lesser soul gems I have, then use them to enchant a bunch of cheap items.

    Problem is, at level 41, most of the dungeon creatures I fight are too high a level to fill a lesser soul gem, some skeletons do, wolves, spiders etc... but never in great numbers.

    Anyone know where I can find a LOT of low level creatures to kill my way through?

    Thanks

  • Buying an LCD monitor, resolution help?

    I'm looking to purchase a new monitor, mostly for gaming.

    My machine isn't uber, it can run most new games, but not on max settings. I tend to only play games a few years old anyway, and max settings arent a big issue for me, what matters is being able to see everything clearly.

    I'm considering buying this http://www.samsung.com/uk/consumer/pc-peripherals/...

    The only thing that I'm unsure about is the resolution. Is 1360 x 768 adequate for the 19", or should I be looking for higher res?

    Or is there something else I'm overlooking? I really don't know much about displays, so any advice on how to spend my money wisely - would be much appreciated.

  • I'm looking for some creepy/scary background noise for board gaming?

    Playing a horror board game tonight, usually have some music on in the background, but would be fun if I had a nice long backing track, with maybe footsteps, creaky doors, and just general creepy noises. Anyone know of a source of such a track?

  • Is Final Fantasy XIV any -better-?

    I bought FFXIV (the new mmo in the series) when it first came out. I didn't even play it for the full free month, it was so ridiculously bad in my opinion.

    At the time the 30 day trial ran out I got an email saying due to feedback they would be making changes and extending the trial period. Then I got another email saying they had extended the trial period even further. Then I got another email saying it was free to play until further notice, and they had fired a huge number of important staff so they could address the changes that need to be made to the game - and haven't heard anything since.

    So anyone know if anything has actually changed?

    When I played (right at the start) there was so little content people were basically just killing around the quest hubs... and that was all, the interface was horrible to use - and it was laggy as hell. Most of the people I spoke to when playing the first few days were feeling the same as me. The game plays soooooo slowly, and there was little to do. So you're basically running somewhere, or just grinding stupidly easy quests in slow motion.

    I would like to see them re-think the game, cos I was looking forward to levelling my character and exploring the content, but it was just too uncomfortable to play. So yeah - any known changes? Or does it seem they've just left it to rot?

    I finally seem to have found a torrent with the buffy collection. However I only got as far as the end of After The Fall. And I'm looking to download anything since, I found a few dribs and drabs in various (old) torrents, anyone know of a source where I can get the collection? Preferably from Aftermath onward.

  • Absorption Lines: Ionised Helium?

    So I'm studying for my Astronomy exam. And I'm trying to memorise the key absorption line features of stars based on their spectral type (OBAFGKM). From what I understand, if an element is ionized, it will not emit photons, because the electrons are moving freely, they will not be bound to the atom's energy levels, and thus will not release a photon when moving 'back down' energy level. So why is it my textbook (and various other sources) say that an O type star's spectrum will show "Lines of ionized helium" and for instance a K type star will show ionized metals?

  • 3.5mm jack audio switcher.. such a device?

    Ok so I have a surround sound system, with only one input for 3.5mm audio jack. I have 3 jacks that I use, TV, games console, and PC. I used a splitter for them at first, but they let all the signals through at once, so there is interference and a loss of quality unless I unplug the 2 i'm not using. Ideally I want a simple device that has all 3 plugged in with a switch to select which jack is active - so I don't need to keep switching cables. Anyone know of one?

  • looking for a perfume...?

    Looking for a subtle perfume as a gift. Emphasis on the subtle. The person I'm buying for doesn't like overpowering smells, so nothing too sweet or musky. Something light, perhaps quite floral or fruity without smelling like pot pourri or toilet cleaner.

    Suggestions?

  • Can't get PC to boot from CD (XP) Help?

    I haven't seen the machine myself yet, just talking to my friend on the phone - and this one has me stumped.

    He has a few nasty viruses and the PC is generally in need of a major clean-up as it crashes so regularly. I advised him to backup anything he wanted kept and to format his hard drive. He only has one HD with a single partition.

    Once I got him to set the CDROM to boot device, he is given the 'press any key' option, the comp then says "Booting from CD.." then DOESN'T - just loads, then appears with the Windows welcome screen.

    This happens with TWO different XP install/boot discs and TWO different CD drives.

    He can access the discs via windows - but obviously cant format while windows is loaded on the only partition.

    My best guess is that it's a faulty motherboard or something - and all i can think of doing is maybe getting him to send me his HD and I could put it in my PC and try and format for him.

    Ran it by a couple of friends also and just got blank faces.

    Before we start taking computers to bits, does anyone have any ideas they can offer?

    The PC make is Iqon btw, thats all I know.

  • Physics: Photoelectric Effect & Quantum Theory?

    I read an exam question for 3 marks that asks:

    "Explain why the photoelectric effect can be explained by a particle model of light."

    I'm having a little trouble with this, I thought I understood the concept - but when it comes to explaining it, theres obviously some key factor I'm missing that puts it into simple terms.

    I get as far as as explaining that if the results of the effect are proportional to the light's frequency, as opposed to it's intensity - that therefore . . . ????

    Saying 'therefore it light must be made up of discrete packets of energy' makes sense to me, but I can see why it lacks a full explanation and I doubt it would score me 3 points.

    Can anyone help me verbalise it?

    Thanks

  • Where to sell EU WoW account?

    I read some great reviews on accountsbay.com and it seemed I would make some decent cash, however they are not currently buying EU accounts.

    Can anyone reccomend anywhere I can sell my account?

    I have 1x80 (horde) on a RPPVP realm, with a few 30-60 alts on the same realm.

    Then on another RPPVP realm I have some alliance, notably a 60+ and 70+

    Ideally I want as much money as possible, as quickly as possible, but any advice appreciated. There seem to be a lot of half-assed sites buying EU accounts for a measly amount of cash.

    Would anyone recommend just using ebay?

  • Physics problem. Calculating photon energy.?

    I'm doing some home-learning physics, and have been given an example of how to calculate the energy of a photon with the following:

    hf = & + Ek

    Ek = kinetic energy in joules

    f = frequency in Hz

    h = planck's constant 6.3 x 10(-34)

    & = work function in eV

    QUESTION:

    copper has a work function of 4.7eV and releases a photon of frequency 7.2 x 10(15) Hz - what is the kinetic energy of the photon?

    ANSWER:

    Ek = hf - &

    = 6.63 x 10(-34) x 7.2 x 10(15) - 4.7

    = 6.63 x 7.2 x 10(-34) + 15 - 4.7

    = 31.16 x 10(-19) J - 4.7

    = 31.161 x 10(-19) / 1.6 x 10(-19) eV - 4.7 eV

    = 19.48 eV = 4.7 eV

    = 14.78 eV

    MY QUESTION: IS THIS CORRECT?

    I think I maybe missed something, when I go to do this i do...

    Ek = hf - &

    = 6.63 x 10(-34) x 7.2 x 10(15) - 4.7

    = 4.77 x 10(-18) J - 4.7

    = 4.77 x 10(18) / 1.6 x 10(-19) eV - 4.7

    = 29.835 - 4.7

    = 25.135 eV

    Can someone please tell me where I'm going wrong? Or is the example answer flawed?

    The line Ek = 6.63 x 7.2 x 10(-34) + 15 - 4.7 in the example answer really confuses me, im not sure how it gets from the previous step to that one.

    BTW... numbers in brackets are powers, eg 1 x 10(2) = 10 to the power of 2 = 100

  • Star Wars KOTOR2 - Screen Flicker?

    Game version: 1.0

    OS: XP SP2

    GFX: Nvidia GeForce 8500 GT

    RAM: 2gig

    There just appears to be a constant flicker with an overlay whenever the dame is running. Makes all the 3d avatars look like they are freaking out, and all the menus and stuff vibrate a bit.

    Also - I'm getting stuck in an infinite loop talking to the first guy at the start, like theres a button jammed or something.. but no controllers are setup and it keeps happening with kb and mouse unplugged.
